Both front and rear shim kits comes with 2 shim for each pad and you're not suppose to put any grease behind the shim nor the pads. Only grease the rear brake pins and use a good brake cleaner on the brakes.

I've never heard of not greasing the shims...on any car.

If you've good quality shims.. there's no need for greasing and our manual stats not to grease our shims as well.

They are OEM shims I bought from the dealership. Where in the manual does it state that? Even if you aren't supposed to grease them, I don't see how the anti-squeal lubricant would be causing the squeals.

9. Install the NEW No. 1 and No. 2 anti-squeal shims on the brake pads. Do NOT apply any
grease to the pads or shims.

Would worn rotors cause brakes to squeal? I know mine are due to be changed and it's the only other thing I can think that could be causing the noise.

Did you bed-in the new pads properly?

Sure did! The noise was there even before changing the pads though.

It starts around 25mph with medium braking. Yesterday I was driving through Hot Springs and they were squealing like crazy. Today however, not one bit. It's so weird.

If you didn't replace the rotors or resurface them you're putting new pads onto a glazed rotor which most likely is causing the squeak. DIYers or independent shops will do that then the customer goes to the dealer asking why their brakes are squeaking.

I'm hoping this is the case. I will be back in San Diego soon so I'll be able to change them. Once I get my new rotors, I have to bed the brakes the same way as when putting in new pads right?

From what a couple of my friends, who are more into cars than I am , have done is they'll replace or resurface the rotors then lightly sand down a little material from the brake pads. It worked on a scion i used to drive, should be the same for lexus. if you DONT sand down the pads a little bit then slap new rotors on, I think it'll still squeak since now the pads surface is glazed.

I guess what i'm trying to say is:

1: replace or resurface rotors
2: sand down brake pads lightly and evenly
3: shims/ lube
4: test drive!
5: have a beer or two.

Sanding or the actual bed-in procedure is about the same thing really. I'd still opt for the bed-in procedure though.

might as well just sand it lightly since you have to take the brakes apart anyways.

Not specifically related to the topic at hand, but for clarification, the IS350 front brakes do not get any grease applied to the shims, the IS250 on the other hand, does. Both the IS250 and IS350 are meant to have grease applied to the shims on the rear.

Could the grease cause the squealing?
