Question How do shocks & springs work?

I recently changed from OEM shocks + springs,
to Tokico Blue Shocks + Tein H Tech Springs.

I'm finding the ride too bumpy / firm and want to go back.

Is it enough to keep the Tokico Shocks & just re-add OEM springs?

Can someone explain how they work and which affects ride firmness/quality most?

It's a partnership with basically shared qualities. The springs adding the.. well.. spring.. and the shocks adding the absorption and dampening.

If anything, the jarring feeling you're experiencing would come from the springs a bit more than the shocks being as that you now have a tighter wind.

With the money you spent on springs and shocks, you could've gotten a set of coilovers. With those you can adjust it your comfort!

The combination of your springs and shocks probably don't match the ride quality you're expecting.

Coilover were $400 more shipped to Australia

Will swapping back to OEM springs be enough?

And are there variations in OEM springs? Sewell seem to think so :/

I have a 2007 IS250 with 18" factory wheels.
Can I buy these springs: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...#ht_500wt_1278

Because on SEWELL there are 14 different springs so how do I know I'll get the right one if I buy secondhand from someone else?

What happened to the ones you just took out? Springs don't typically just go bad unless they've taken a serious beating. I'm sure your old ones were just fine..

I left them behind at the suspension shop and fear they may be in the bin now :/
And if they're not, they had 74,000miles on them so better to buy new ones if I'm going to the effort yeah?

Do you know if any OEM IS250 springs will be okay or do I need specific one if I have 18" wheels

If anything it's your old shocks that you should be worried about, not the springs.

Even if you stay on OEM springs with Tokico shocks, it's still going to be "bumper" than stock ride

IMHO $400 additional to $1000 for added adjustability of height and dampening is well worth it.

Yeah too late to go coilovers now.

My old shocks were 6 years old with 73,000miles (120,000km)

Will keeping tokico shocks & going back to OEM springs will restore 3/4 of ride quality?

You should've did more research with other IS owners that have/had your setup if there are any. Or you should've listened to advice about getting coilovers or go for the F-sport springs and shocks(the spring rate and dampening match with each other.)

Too late now, so can anyone advise if there are variations in OEM Springs as per sewell parts list above?

I need to know whether I can buy that ebay springs listing I linked earlier

I saw your other thread, many were suggesting you get coilovers. But if your setup is bumpy, drive it more to see if it smooths out after break-in period.

I wouldn't know if there are variations but I'm actually changing my springs on Wednesday to F-sport Springs. if you live in california i'll sell you mine for $100 if you pick it up here.

To be clear- The F-sport springs are progressive... so it's impossible to "match" shocks to them since the rate changes.

That's one of the problems with progressive springs, and why people sometimes describe the F-sport setup as "floaty" or rough on harsh roads, it's impossible for the shocks to be "perfect" for both the softest initial rate AND the firmest progressive rate.

That's one of the many reasons linear springs (as used in the sport package suspension, and most coilovers) will provide superior handling.

I reckon it's a combination of both springs and shocks that's giving you the "bumpier and firmer" ride.

I just got Tanabe NF210 springs installed on stock shocks. Ride is a little lower, little firmer, and a little bumper, but still similar to stock setup (which is what I want).
