Default Considering brake upgrade on 92 SC400

Well, I am wanting to upgrade the brakes on my 92 SC400. Obvious choices are 95-00 LS400 or Supra TT brakes. My question is, which should I go? From what I have read, they're a direct bolt on, but if I go with the Supra TT brakes, I have to make sure to get rims large enough to clear the rotors. Anything else I'm missing?

I am also having second thoughts though, after reading this thread here. Thoughts?

Even if you go with LS400 (95+) brakes you still need a wheel that will clear them as well. Depends on what your budget is and how soon you want to get them. LS400 bbks are readily available and very reasonably priced. Supra TT kits are much more expensive for the front kits, and tough to find for rears as well.

I've considered doing LS400 Front and SC400 rears on my SC3 just to help out a bit overall.

I've gone LS400 fronts and TT rears and they performed quite nicely.

EDIT: I could not get TT brakes from any of the auto parts places like I did a couple years back. I also found that LS400 brakes offer a-lot more options on rotors and brake pads than they previously did.

I've changed my mind and believe Ls400 is the way to go.

I've tried to find Rear TT's at autopart stores...they just don't have them, even for special order.

No, it looks like they aren't in stock. I had to order one of the front calipers with the brake pad because the "semi-loaded" caliper was out of stock. It's kind of hit or miss, luckily I got a pair while they were in stock.

I have TT front calipers on my car and I highly recommend them if they're in your budget. I've only used the OEM TT pads and despite the dust I have no complaints. I am still on the '93 SC300 rear calipers. LS400 calipers will give you a lot of what the TT's will under most driving conditions although since the pad selection is very small I can't comment on that. Since you have an SC400 you already have Supra NA rear calipers.

Either way, that link has a lot of great information but don't let it dissuade you from changing your front system to LS400 or TT calipers. Either conversion will give you a car that it much safer to drive hard with reduced fade through turns and they will stop you VERY quickly should you need to. Make sure you have good tires at this point as well.

I think that if you really want aggressive braking without going: brembo, endless, etc. That TT fronts are your best bet along with TT rears (ideal).

If you want better than stock SC3, go with LS4 fronts and SC4 rears for the most cost effective results.

I just got the brakes from Advanced auto and they're not Supra TT brakes, they're stock NA Brakes. Great... I ordered $140 rotors and $175 pads too.

The cheapest way to go is LS400 calipers up front. Best BBK "bang for the buck" upgrade that you can get for the SC! Sure you can pay more....perhaps MUCH more, but those LS400 4 pot calipers do a hell of a job on a SC, no BS.

Default Carbotech Racing front brake pads for SC400

If you are just looking for extra braking power, on my SC400 I just upgraded the front pads to a real high torque racing compound. I had CarboTech make two sets for me and still have one new one left. google Carbotech brakes if you want to know more about them. They made a huge difference in stopping power especially when hot- no fading. Carbotech sells a lot of brake pads to SCCA racers and they have compounds simular to Hawk and PFC racing.

Racing compound brake pads make a big difference...even with the stock calipers but the LS 4-pot calipers look better!!!

I also got a lot better pedal feel by replacing the rubber caliper hoses with steel braided ones from Goodridge

I sold my SC and still have one new set of the Carbotech AX-6 front pads left if someone wants them. You can reach me at:mmrracing@msn.com
