Question Factory Offsets

Hello everyone!

The new car bug has bitten me, and I test drove a 1996 SC400 today. I may pick it up, but want to ensure that I don't impulse shop, and know all the quirks that I need to know about this purchase.

What is the stock offset for the SC? And what is the max you can go before running into rubbing issues (18" and 19")?

Does Ground Control make a coilover for the SC? If not, who does?

That's all for now...got to get it first...then I will go from there.

I did use the search function, btw, and it pulled up nil regarding this. Thanks!

All of that info is here. You need to do a better job searching I guess.

First question. Stock is 38-50mm offset. Depending on rim. Second question, 20" will fit.

3rd Ground control builds a supra kit that may fit but that type of fake coil over setup is not the proper way to setup your Lexus. There are quite a few REAL coil-overs avail for $900-2000

Get the car...you will love it.

thank you...the search only pulled up mixed results, i.e. will these rims fit, etc. I was hoping to find an FAQ completed...like the one lex400sc is doing.

As a Legend owner, our suspension upgrades are limited to Koni Struts, and the Eibach Pro kit 1.1"F, 1.0R and the Ground Control setup. JIC supposedly makes one for the Legend but it is hard to find...I guess Emerald can tell me if its available now or not...

What is the name of the coilover of taste for the SC?
And I probably wouldn't go higher than 19", that is why I asked what the offset of choice is, so I can choose a wheel as close to that as possible so I can lower it w/o issues.

Thanks

I appreciate your help

Get the car, pick a wheel, then consider offsets.

Several variables to consider.

Tein's seem to be the pick for coil-overs.

"Stock is 38-50mm offset. Depending on rim."

Huh??

Stock offset for the SC400 is +50mm, front and rear.

strongsail,

That is what I read also. However, If the rim is 7.5" then the center of the rim is at 3.75" and a +50 = almost 2 more inches. That means that the mating surface that meets up to the brake disk would be only 1.75" from the outer most edge of the wheel. Welp, I looked at my stocks and realized that this was not the case.... It was more like 2"-2.5" Which pushes the offset # closer to 38-50 depending on which rims your car came with.

So when people say 50+ to me I say HUH?

Tein makes a few coilovers for our car, Eibach and Intrax make springs, Tokico and KYB make shocks, and Canover makes air cans. Note: I talked to a Tein engineer at the Carson meet and he told me there aren't any Tein HAs or Flexes designed for the SC specifically; However, there are a couple SCs running around with them on. I think Steve Ganz owns one of them, but I may be wrong.

So the stock offsets are +38mm front and +50mm rear? Confirm please so that I can add it into the FAQ.

Rich,

Tough to say... I think 50 is the correct number but I don't know if it is the same for all of the SC wheel options. However, no matter what they are all the same from front to back.

I think they are +38mm +52mm then because those two numbers stick out in my head from the wheel forum.

Well, the offset would be important to me, so I hope someone can verify - I do not want my front wheels sticking out due to an incorrect low offset wheel. I appreciate the help fellas.

legendary,

Stock wheels will not stick out. The factory offset will ONLY really help you out if you are talking about factory rims. The reason is because all OTHER wheels of different width/size/tire will have different offsets to keep the wheel in the correct position. This is why I shot you a range of values that will work on aftermarket wheels.

If you are not familiar with what offset is....let me try and assist.

Offset is that distance from the center of the wheel to the bolt pattern. Meaning, it changes for every size of wheel. The wider yoou go the more offset you may need. Too much will obviously hit the suspension.

Ground Control? Hehehehe...that stuff is pure garbage!

Any Supra MKIV coilover should work just fine with the SC (it's the same chassis as the Supra pretty much). Steve has Tein CS's for a Supra on his SC...works perfectly.

There are many manufacturers that make coilovers for the Supra so you shouldn't have a problem finding one. Personally, I would recommend either Tein, HKS, TOM'S, etc...

Tein makes the HA, CS, and FLEX. The CS is the most comfortable...the HA's is second and the FLEX is the stiffer of the three (which is opposite of the GS...where the FLEX is softer than the HA...dunno what the deal is with that!)

The HA's can be had for under $1000. The CS is more like $1200+.

PM SupraTRD or email Steve at gonzo4u@earthlink.net for a firm price.

These are meant for the JDM Soarer, so follow at your own risk, but I'm assuming they're the same for the US models. I dunno though

Oh also I wouldn't lower the SC lower than 2~2.5"
