IS350 Dustless Brake Pads
#16
I ordered my low dust pads yesterday. I currently have some brake squeal when coming to a stop and planned on re-using my original shims and using anti vibration grease. Are new shims necessary with pad change or can I clean and re-use mine?

Resurfacing rotors isn't usually necessary. Many places do it "just in case", but if it doesn't need it (and they rarely do), you're wasting good rotor material for no reason. Unless you are actually having a problem with the rotors (vibration due to hot-spots/deposits, etc.), there's really no need. As I said, most dealers do machine the rotors just to cover themselves so they don't get any customers coming back with issues after a brake job, but it costs more and is usually unnecessary. If there weren't vibrations before, there usually aren't any afterward either.
That being said, I find rotors to be cheap enough that I like to machine/replace them anyway, either to get rid of unsightly rust/lip or because they are looking pretty grooved. I've found I usually machine once between pad changes and replace rotors at pad changes. But that's just me, and it's a personal thing with no merit to actually do. It's like people who change their oil more often, etc. A waste of time and money perhaps, but it feels good, haha.

I called up Lexus of Concord for Front brake pads installed. $400. So ridiculous. I laughed and hung up. Purchased my dust-less pads for $66 shipped and 30 minutes of my time for install.

Yeah, I have StopTech Streets...I dislike them personally. I was giving them a try, never used the brand before. But personally I want a pad that has a good initial cold or warm bite to it; the StopTech Streets do not deliver on that. These things are probably comparable to OEM low-dust pads, except these things put out more dust than I would have thought. Perhaps it's my slotted rotors helping there. LOL!
