Shocks or Struts???
Hi,
I am a newbie here so hi to you guys/gals. I have a question regarding my 99 GS400 suspension. I wanted to replace my stock suspension since I've installed a new set of tires. I was wondering my GS400 used shocks or struts for the suspension? I am planning to get KYB stuff but confused...
Thanks.

Hey there, FUSION! Welcome to CL!
Here's something that I've been able to gather on the web:
"Perhaps you've heard the word "strut," or, more formally, MacPherson strut. Struts are simply shock absorbers used as major structural members. For struts, the shock absorber is placed inside the coil spring. In addition to saving space, it often costs less. Many cars use a strut design."
Based on this description, our car is designed with struts.
Generally, for you upgrade decision, it makes no difference: it is a matter of design what the car uses, not your choice, unless you want to do an engineering project. Just make sure you get the proper application (for GS).
Also, keep in mind that you have two ways you can go:
1) Get the springs and shock absorbers separately (like Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, or L-tuned).
2) Get a coilover system (springs and shocks together). Coilovers let you change the height of the car and some also let you adjust shock absorber damping (compression and/or rebound).
Do a CL search for this and you will find a ton stuff.
Good luck in you modding endeavors!
