Default New to CL & Lexus

Hello all... joined the forum a few days back as I just purchased a DD 2GS3... it's a '99 w/ 155K miles on the ticker... I plan to keep my '05 CTS-V as my performance car because we all know there's no muscle like american muscle! LOL... but I've always admired the quality in Lexus and knew this car was a creampuff and one that could be trusted in higher mileage ranges.

I'd be interested to know what kinds of things are commonplace to repair or make better on this car, so any info would be helpful. I do feel like I've got some bad control arm bushings right now, so we can start w/ that.

Thanks,
Shannon

Welcome!

I had these same exact q's when i first got my lexus hope some of the info helps.
all your DIY needs

here are some of the common problems we have with the 2gs.
1.Door lock actuator failure
2.water getting into headlights
3.wheel wobble/vibration @ 55-65mph
4.sunroof vibration
5.stolen foglights. (especially yellow capsuled ones)
6.heatshield rattle (under the car)
7.ball joint failures.
(Ball Joint DIY) , balljoint failure thread

to make the vehicle better. since you have a cts-v these small upgrades would make it similar.

1.suspension - kyb shocks + nf210 springs (stock feel w. light drop), kyb + eibach (stiffer than nf210). if you want something more or youre pockets deep go with coilovers/air. change to poly busings & upgrade sway bars.
(Poly steering rack bushing , Caster Arm bushing
2.l-tuned steering ecu (sportier/responsive feel)
DIY + review of LTuned Steering ECU
3.wheels - if youre not a fan of aftermarket there is a whole thread on OEM rims from lexus or other makes that fits our vehicles.
4.na-t forced induction. can handle a good amount of hp with stock internals to keep up with the 400/430 guys.

Which heatshield are we talking about? I have a rattle somewhere under the car also. I'm positive it is not coming from the suspension. Which heatshield should I be looking at?

Thanks.

It's the heat shield on the mid-pipe between the headers and y-pipe. And it's not easy to remove. Has to be cut off. GL

Hey welcome to CL and to the lexus community. The heat shield on these cars after a while starts to rattle, it has happened to all 3 of my GS's.you should lift the car up and tap around with your hand and more than likely the heat shield is loose, what I did a couple of times was go to the muffler shop and have them tack weld it in a few places but after a couple of months it would come loose again until I decided to remove the darned thing alltogether which Is what I think you should do. There is a couple of nuts and bolts that hold it in place but most of the time those are completely rusted out so you're going to need some metal shears from the local home depot or similar to cut around the bolts, but once you get under there you will see and it really isn't difficult to take off. Now go snap some pics we want to seeeee

I got pissed off one day and just ripped out my heat shield. That rattling noise got on my nerve. One of the bracket was rusted. That was around 70k ish. Do u know if u got stock suspension or when was the last change.

Wow! This from a guy who's probably ungreatful for the Titans... See... steers and queers aren't the only things that come from Texas... one thing's for certain though, everyone else (all other states) can have this govt, while we'll be whistling dixie, proud to be a lone republic that can cecede from the union!

I'll get some pics up soon fellas... it's not high priority right now. The DIY section is...
