Rear end sway, how can I stop this???
I Just bought a 98 GS400 from a private seller so I do not know the cars entire repair history. I put 20" wheels on the car right after I bought it also. The problem that I have been having is with my rear end suspension. The front end is fine, but whenever I hit a bump on the street, I feel the rear end jerk off to the side. When I'm on the freeway cruising and when the car is bouncing, I can feel the the rear end sway from side to side. I was just wondering what I should first to get this problem fixed. I have also noticed that there is inside tire wear on the inside edge of my rear tires indicating an alignment problem. Do you think that the inside of my rear tires wearing has anything to do with the swaying of my rear end from side to side? Should I start off with a rear alignment or does it sound like a problem with the rear shocks themselves?...I need to get this fixed ASAP cuz I get scared that I'm gonna lose control on the freeway if I go to fast and hit a bump or dip. I'd really appreciate any advice that you'd be able to give me....
Thanks,
Steve

Steve

Steve,
I'd definitely take the car straight to the nearest Lexus dealer and have them check it out. Don't fool around with safety issues. You might also have a CarFax run. If you post a message here requesting a CarFax, and give the VIN number, someone on the board usually has access to run one free of charge. Hopefully that will tell you whether the car has ever been in an accident or not.

Yeah I would for sure take it in to get checked out. I just put 20s on my ride and I don't have that problem at all as a matter of fact my handling on the GS has gotten better!!!!!

dandada2000v6 - Might want to check and see if there was any service done to the suspension. If the stock shocks are still on it , I would start there. That should get an alignment thrown in. Then see what is up.
