yeah that master cylinder is not cheap by any means. I think retail at the lexus dealer is like $1500. See if you can goto a yard and find one. I've seen some on eBay a while back for like $400. Best of luck..

im going to be doing this next on my GS. i noticed after my last brake change, the pedal began to feel soft. there isnt any leaking, so i assume the seals are all gone.

sewell makes a brake master cylinder rebuild kit. however in your case, you said your fluid is leaking and the level in the resevoir is dropping, so you will need to replace the whole unit.

$800 sounds a bit high, but then if using original Lexus parts, then its on the money. a brake master cylinder i assume is around 400, and the remainer is labour and fluids. the mechanic will need to replace the brake master cylinder, BUT also need to do a brake bleed flush as it will introduce air into the system. thus, im guessing the amount of labout for just the brake master cylinder is around 1.5 to 2hrs.

Mines kinda soft also. But I think we should try bleeding the brakes first before jumping into conclusion.

OEM unit (brand new) is $1200 or so. You can source a used unit on ebay or a toyota junkyard. Did your mechanic tell you where it's leaking at? If the internal seals are gone, the rebuilding kit is a fix for it.

umm, when i did my last brake change, i changed the pads and the lines, so a brake bleed was manditory. i even thought that i still had air in the lines and bled it twice on top of the first time. once a few days after use, and again a month down the road.

either way, with 165,000 miles on the odometer, the seals are bound to be gone already.
