Same here!!! I bang the living crap on it and it never came loose. So I used a fork and two hits it was loose. Only took two hours to do both side not bad at all.

Great write up. Had my lower fall apart on me (Just got the car a week before and saw the ball joints oozing grease, just hadn't fixed it yet. Luckily it was as I was pulling out of a parking spot so I didn't damage anything except the ABS/VSC sensor. Thanks for referencing hardware sizes, saved me a ton of trouble.

Yeah I tried to put the calipers on some blocks so that they wouldn't hang from the brake line but they did slip at one point. Any way to fix this?

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting the ball joints replaced on my GS as a pre-caution. Did any of you have to replace upper control arms? Sounds like that is the pricey part of the fix and I'm wondering if I need to worry about that.

Thanks.

^^Not sure about the control arms but a lot of members also replace the tie rods while they''re at it. It's fairly cheap too if you get it from Rockauto.com.

yea since your there you might as well do the tie rods, and upper control arms. I'm sure the upper and lower ball joints are pretty loose.

This thread is awesome, thanks so much! I see mention and one posted video of how to "hit" tie rods and ball joints out, but I did not see a video specifically for Lexus.

I tackled the LBJ's this past weekend. For those of you that cannot get your LBJ off using the hammer method, I took a quick video to specifically show how I did it. 1998 GS400 with 118K miles. Pull up on it and keep hitting it. It will go - trust me. As for the tie rod, I just used a pitman arm remover because it was sitting there. I was too scared to bang on that one, but I really just should have done it.
