Default Finger Gaps & Rubbing Issues!

Guys,

I would like to know about the majority of you guys on the gaps at your rear tires and its fenders. What is the average space clearance from the tyre to the fender?

I am using coilovers with Dunlop SP9000 275/35/18 tires on my rears with 1.5 finger gap between the tires and the fenders, while my front has 1 finger gap. From time to time when I’m going at about 80 – 100Kms, the tires seem to rub against the rear fenders. (which is really annoying)

I am not sure whether:
1) My height settings at my rear are too low?
2) Or the tyre model (Dunlop SP9000) that I am using are too “rounded” wide (when being compared to other brands)
3) Or whether I need to set negative cambers to the rear?

Could anyone could post pics of their finger gaps at the rear end of their car, just to get an idea whether my settings are too low? Or I should go change for a more appropriate tyre model?

Here are the pics of my rear tires and the fender (right side)

Appreciate the advice & opinions

You have 18's and your rubbing at high speeds? Very odd. I'm no wheel expert, but, my shot in the dark would be to say maybe its 'your wheel offsets'? In your pix, your car doesn't look low enough to rub on highways-unless you have really bad roads up there...anyway, i'm no expert, just my $0.02!

it looks like the offset on your wheels are too aggressive in the back. stick out quite a bit. try take out the black plastic tab on the fender lip, or even shave the fender. that should do it

It could be the roads are very bad over here. too many uneven dip in the roads.

Anyone has pic of their shaved fenders? I would set the cambers to negative. But a pic may give me an idea. This rubbing never happened when i was using my old tires Bridgestone Potenza GIII.

^^ What he said!

Take off those black fender arch strips. Four phillips-head screws, problem solved.

once you take off the black strip, what is the best way to trim the fender? would rolling it with a baseball ball work?

Try going with a 265 wide tire. Instead of the 275. Thats what I did my 285 rears were rubbing so I went smaller.

i wouldn't really roll fenders, paint can easily chip. i just use belt sander and grind down the whole metal lip (of course put tape outside for protection)

I think a combo of things....

- Wheel offset too low (sticks out too much).
- Tires too "square". Im on Dunlop Direzzas....275/30/19 in rear....and the edges on these tires are designed to taper inwards...that helps a bit to avoid rubbing.
- Coilovers are too soft....too much travel......can dampening be set stiffer?
- Camber....a bit negative camber is always good.

Goodluck.

I am thinking that way. Do you have a pic of the Direzzas? I think Sp9000 may be "square"

- Camber....a bit negative camber is always good.
By doing so, it may prevent the rear rubbing but it also reduces the vehicle's height on the rear ground clearance (so get ready for scrapes yikes!). I think i'll still go with it!

I had Direzzas on my previous wheels. On 9.5'' wide wheel they looked stretch'd a bit, but on 10'' wheel those tyres will give you a decent amount of space you need. I personally liked them for its price

I just increased the height at rear by half inch today, tested them and still rubs at 120km/h

NOW that is a tyre type/model I am looking for! It is more likely to solve my rubbing problem.

Gonna fully utilise the existing "square" tyre to the max and then I'm gonna look out for direzza or something similar.

What kind of suspension coilover system do you have? Sounds like you need a stiffer setup
