Default Yet another STEERING wheel vibration thread, questions...

My car like many has an annoying vibration at 55-65mph , but I recently noticed that the vibration goes away when i am on the brakes with minimal force. I have read that some members said that the rotors maybe warped but Im not sure if this if this is the problem. Does anyone know since the car vibrates liek that , would pressing on the brakes stop it ?Also does this sound like a bad brake rotor? My car is a 99 and i heard that they came with a crappy steering column , but im not sure of that either. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like bad balance, or non-hubcentric rims without centering rings, or bent rims, or out of alignment.

Somethin's wrong with the allignment/wheels like everyone said. A warped rotor would cause the steering wheel to shake when you hit the brakes, as opposed to making it go away.

Thanks for the info , im going to change my tires soon and ill get another aligment right after. So then Ill see if that helps any. Also my steering whell when it vibrates , it makes noises liek it could be the steering rack , it vibrates and i hear a soft thumping noises when it vibrates but im not sure what causes that or if anyone elses steering vibration is the same.

Default Shaking in steering wheel

After replacing the rotors, brakes, tires (3 diff sets) and having the alignment done (x2), I finally had to buy new rims. Wheels were bent from a monster pot hole and one had finally cracked. I had the rims refinished once at a price of $125 (x4) per wheel, this didn't fix the issue.

I purchased a set off eBay from a place called W.A.C. (Wheels and Caps), phone 866-745-rims. The wheels are after market replacements made to factory specs. VERY HAPPY!!!! Ask for Brian, he was very helpful.

This had made all the difference, I had suspected the rims the entire time but didn't want to pay $400 plus per rim to replace with OEM from Lexus.

what lexus told me.. was that my tires were starting to get out of round.... i dont know what causes this... i bought anew set of tires and now bout 10k later .. i feel this again and i balanced them at my work and put them on and it was still there.. so i think sumthing is causing these tires on our cars to get out of round.... my $.02

all i can say is , lower ball joints and LOWER CONTROL ARMS the bushing within the lower control arms are bad very bad and allow the camber setting to move arounfd while driving which will change the susp geometry while driving and will yield a on and off shimmy/vibration

my steps in resolving the 55-60 vibration and "knight rider" steering over uneven pavement. Also clicking noises.

-a real 4 wheel alignment
-full balance of all wheels
-ball joints replaced
-tie rods replaced
-control arms replaced
-shocks and springs replaced (optional)
-trd upper strut brace (optional)
-trd lower brace (optional)

future mods
-hubcentric rings
-tighten steering rack

end results
-happy
-max'd out credit card

Load force balancing to within 5 grams left-to-right in the front.
