Default New brakes

I have just hit 52,000 on my 2000 GS400. My stock breaks are just about ready to give in.
I wish i could afford 14" stop techs, but I'm really only looking to spend $2,000 totall.

I sport 19" ATs in the summer, but when the winter comes I'm forced to throw my stock 17's back on. How big of a caliper can I go with , while still being able to roll the stock wheels?

And are there any recomondations for what breaks to put on my gs for that price.

I searched for this topic for sometime, so If it has been coverd Im sorry.

Any help would be great thanks.

$2000 total for what? Front BBK and rear upgrades? Or just Front BBK?

As far as BBK, you are in the range of the Rotora and StopTech 13" kits. The issue will be caliper clearance. I know that Mike from PLP put StopTech 332 (13" kit) on his OEM IS 17s. What I cannot remember is if he needed spacers. It will be tight but it should work. Even if you need spacers, it might not be too bad since it is only for a few months. I am of course assuming your 19s will clear the caliper too. Here is a pic of it:

You can download the StopTech template and try it on your OEM wheels. Try it on the 19s too while you are at it. The Rotoras will need a few mms less clearance so if the StopTechs fit, the Rotoras should too.

You can forget the Supra TTs, LS options. They are relatively inepensive but the calipers are HUGE and will not clear the OEM wheels.

I got used to it and liked the look. It is similar to when I had the 355 kit under my 18s.

Wow you guys are quick, this is great.

To tell you the truth Im alittle out of my element when it comes to brakes.
As far as getting a full BBK, not sure if thats needed. I really dont rally my gs too much.

But I do love the look of large brakes, cross drilled. And overall better braking would be great.

The 13" looks alittle too tight for me to take a chance, how big are the stockys? 12"?

I will look into the brands you mentiond.

Thanks again guys.

What I meant was BBK up front and rear upgrades (not BBK but matching rotor style, SS line, pads) or just the front BBK..

I believe OEM brakes are 11.5" front and 12" rear.

List is 2600 before options (drilled rotors, custom caliper colors). Even "discounted", it is more than 2k.

An alternative is to get the Stoptech 13' for $1700-1800. Youcan paint your rear stock calipers to match what ever color you get. If you don't have to have rear upgrades. this will ket you under $2k
I used the Stoptech template on my stock 17" GS rins. It was sooooo Close i would say +/- 1mm. Unless yu know of someone fitting themm w/ stock wheels I would get a 5mm spacer. You should be ok like NEO said, since it is yused just for the winter.

Another idea is to just grind off the small section of your wheel that would contact your Caliper.
If your only taking about 1/16-1/32" to grind of that would be even better I think.
I think I have a pic somewhere when I was testing Stoptech fitment on my OEM and BBS wheel. I'll look for it.

Bubbleye,

How about just getting a nice set of drilled or slotted rotors, some high end aftermarket pads (like EBC or Axxis), stainless steel lines and upgraded brake fluid. Paint your calipers with some quality caliper paint that will look good on your ride and call it a day. No issues with clearance on your stockers, etc

Your stopping power will feel nearly as good as an upgraded set of brakes, if you don't drive your GS hard you don't need the upgraded big brakes unless you want them purely for cosmetics.
