front bake shims for '00 GS400?
I just replaced the front brake pads on my '00 GS400. The previous owner apparently discarded the shims (anti-squeal). Do you think they are necessary?
The brakes seems fine, but I've never had a car that didn't use them.
The Lexus dealer wants ~$50 for the front pair. Anyone knows who sells an aftermarket version?

what brand of pads. some aftermarket performance pads do not require the use of adding shims in fact EBC green and red stuff specically state not to use shims in any of their application (i spoke with them) they say it causes excessive heat build up now they tell me after i almost cook my front rotors

I have a set of fronts I ordered from Steve if you want them $35.00 shipped. I ordeered the rear shims and I got the front. Since my car was apart I just went to the dealer and now im stuck with them.

shims required?
I purchased the pads from Steve (Carson Toyota). They had a Rotora(?) label on them, but I believe the box said Axxis(?). They are the current offering on their web site. The pads did not have any instructions, so I assume they would expect the stock shims.
After installing the new pads, the brakes seem fine (responsive), but I don't understand what purpose these shims perform. (I just know they are part of every car I ever worked on).
