Default Shifting Question (Auto - Manual and Power ECT)

is it OK (or safe) to:

1. change from Auto (D) to Manual (M) during driving? or am I supposed to set it to M at the time of engine starting?

2. change from regular to 'PWR' (sporty) during driving?

Why not? We do it here all the time. Low gears for high hill climbs.

i know someknows the proper terms but

its downshifting

when you want to slown down

lets say your going down a steep hill

you can use the lower gears instead of riding the brakes

I used to use the E-Shift all the time on my 98GS4, but then my tranny fluid was super dark and I get my car maintenanced regularly. I had to flush it twice before I got the nice rich pink color again.

Now, I only use E-Shift if I have to slow down quickly.

ok let me rephrase

do not continue hill climbing or hard towing for a long time in th 3 ,2 or L

this may cause severe damage from overheating

to prevent such damage "4" should be used in hill climbing or hard towing

Default using $4,000 tranny to slow down - or use $400 in brakes...

I personally would rather use the $400 brakes to slowdown the car. Because once my brakes go bad, I can then go buy some cross-drilled ones.

Woo hoo!

Breaks are definitely easier to replace then a transmission.

Downshifting to slow down during a hill descent certainly won’t kill the transmission but it will definitely not extend it’s life.

Regarding Hill climbing it’s all the same if you are in M or A or 4 the automatic transmission will still select the best gear to use (example L 2 or 3)

The computer is smart enough to pick the right gear so it’s safest to let it manage the gearing.

As long as you don’t over rev the engine in the lower gear you should not cause any permanent damage.

On second thought the REV limiter will take care of that too.

It's your car.... Tear it UP baby.
