Default A warning to those recently purchasing a 2007-2011 RX

Did you recently buy a 2007-2011 RX?

Did you also look through the maintenance history on drivers.lexus.com and saw that ZLH oil supply hose recall had been complied with?

As more experienced owners probably know, there are _TWO_ different oil hoses that like to explode on this generation RX. Only 1 was a recall (ZLH campaign for a variable valve timing hose).

The second exploding hose is probably a ticking time bomb on your RX because the oil cooler hoses were not a recall, but a warranty extension ZLC (like the cracking dash and a/c amplifier) so all owners did not get a recall notice. Mine exploded a few days ago and dumped nearly 4 quarts of oil in 3 miles of driving.
I was lucky to find it on a short drive. If I were you, I would not take the RX on a long drive unless I had verified that I had the solid metal oil cooler lines AND the upgraded VVT-i hose.
This pic is the oil cooler lines that you probably didn't get replaced unless you or the previous owner noticed a huge oil leak. Standing at the middle of the front bumper, look at the engine just below the bottom of the passenger side cooling fan. If you see this short fat hose with the clamps, you need to get it replaced ASAP! The replacement is all metal with accordion expansion joints in each pipe

You have been warned! ZLC and ZLH are the two different service campaigns you need. I think both starting with ZL added to my confusion when i did my pre-buy research.

07 RX350 at 123k. I did an oil change about a month ago and i was marveling at the absolute lack of any oil residue on the engine. Zero oil on the driveway before it let loose all at once.

Is this for all 2nd Gen (2004-2009) or just some model years?

Updated op to applicable years, thanks!

>>>Repairs related to seepage from the engine oil cooler pipe will now get a longer warranty in some crossovers. In T.S.B. SC-ZLC issued on Aug. 1, Lexus said the leak might develop in 2007-11 RX 350 and 2010-11 RX 450h models. Instead of the standard four-year/50,000-mile warranty, the part will have an unlimited mileage coverage through Jan. 31, 2016, and after that a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty.

IIRC this applies to 3.5L and not 3.3L (e.g. the 2nd gen RX 400h).

This has probably already been answered somewhere in this sub but since this thread is active... anyone know what the dealer charges to replace this? As I recall the improved part is like $30-$40 dollars. My vehicle is beyond even the extended warranty (07 w/168k miles.)

Do you know if this only applies to the 350's as the 330's have a slightly different engine, haven't had time to look for this oil line but didn't see it during an oil change (then again wasn't really looking).

I read about this on the Highlander section on ToyotaNation and it seems the dealer can do it in 1-2 hours at the current rate your dealer uses, Toyota will be cheaper then a Lexus dealer.

Dealers charge like 500$ to do it. Dealers in my area even Toyota ones had the part for 100$ when I called around. I bought an OE metal one online from a Toyota dealer in California for 55$ so shop around. I did the job myself as it is pretty easy, took about an hour to carefully do it. There is a large thread about people's experiences (faulty lines) if you search, and a good DIY video in the DIY sticky thread in our forum.

Oh forgot to mention, I did fill out a ZLC warranty reimbursement from Lexus and after about 50 days, I just got my check. Lexus won't change yours unless it's leaking, but if you do it yourself pre-emptively, they will reimburse.

Does this apply to FWD or AWD or both?

I have a FWD, so my VVTI line was replaced with the recall. Not the cooler line which is for the AWD.

To sum it up it is only on the 3.5 engine....The 3.3 engine from 2004 to 2006 doesn't apply. The RX400h also a 2nd generation had only the 3.3 engine .
