Default Tire Dilemma

After the storm we had here in socal, it created some huge potholes everywhere on the road. I heard the big thump and found out it ripped about 2mm chunk of tire on the front side wall, must have caught the edge of the pothole. Went to a Costco (30 miles away), and the tire technician advised that the metal thread is not showing and it seems mostly cosmetic, but did not recommend a long distance drive where the tire could possibly heat up and expand on the side wall.

I have about 16k miles on my 2014 IS350 RWD with factory Turenzas. Btw how much mileage can i get out of the factory tires? these are rated at 140 threadwear.

I'll mostly likely go with Michelin Super Sports since they seems to be fairly priced (Costco), has great performance and rated at 300 treadwear where as other performance tires are rated at around 240.

Now the question is do I just buy 1 new or used oem front tire, or replace 2 fronts with michelin, or replace all 4?

Thanks

cant go wrong with SS but they are supersoft idk how a pothole would hold up? They are awesome they just throw rocks everywhere at first.

If you can find the pothole and take pictures, counties set money aside for stuff like this. You get it repaired and they reimburse you. You just have to do a quick Google search on the forms you'll need.

Yeah I've researched that as well. Just debating how many tires to get now.

Youll probably need at least two if going to a different tire brand. You don't want a lot of difference between tires.

Ppl on this forum reported 20-25k. Some even less with aggressive driving.

When was the last time you got the threads checked?

* looks like that pothole curbed the wheel too =[

So I should just buy all 4 set since I only have at the most 10k miles left on them.

yeah it seems like the pothole cut right through the tire to the wheel. It doesn't seem to be bent though. I didn't feel any vibrations at high speed (70+mph before knowing about the cut.lol)

I'll have a tech or mechanic check the other tires to sell how much threads it has left.

But since you already got 16k on them already, its a good opportunity to just change out the OEM tires. Alot of ppl on this forum like the Michelin PSS, they last longer than OEM and provide more grip.

Check costco, maybe they got em for the cheap.

And for those with new tires, did you stay with factory spec size?
I'm debating if I should go little wider in the front and maybe go 35 instead of 40 to get rid of the reverse rake look..

Oh I haven't changed mine yet. I'm still on OEM tires only 12k odo.

The PSS would be my next set when I change, I'll probably stay within spec tho, and keep the stagger look.

No plans to lower the car yet.
