Default The Cost of Paint - Outrageous

I posted a couple of weeks earlier about seeking assistance on how to remove the roof drip moldings and surprisingly enough I got absolutely no responses! So, my takeaway from all of this is that either this forum is no longer as active as it once was or people simply don't know how to remove them. So, frustrated as I was that I couldn't get them off successfully, I took it to my body guy that I've used for the past 30 years. Someone I know personally and I trust. Well, they had them off in no time and didn't break a single clip doing it. The reason for the removal of the roof drip moulding was due to the Lexus OEM vinyl wrap coming off.

Now this is my wife's car and it is a 2008 GS that is red. While I had it in to get the roof drip moulding stripped and repainted, I asked them to fix and repaint the rear bumper cover due to a slight bump and rub that happened last year. Total estimate was to be $700-800 to fix and repaint both the bumper cover and the roof rails, which I figured was reasonable.

The day after delivering my car to them I get a phone call from my body guy. He says he has bad news for me. Lexus uses a 3 stage paint on their cars to achieve the pearl color and it cost a whopping $750 just for the material alone, and you could only buy no less than a quart! Astonished, I told him to forget about painting the roof rails and the bumper cover, but it was too late as they had removed the roof rails, stripped them and removed the bumper cover and fixed that as well.

So, at this point, there was no turning back so I said to go ahead and purchase the paint. In the meantime I called Lexus of Birmingham and talked to one of their collision technicians and he CONFIRMED for me that $750 was right on the money for the cost of the paint for my car.

Groan…..

My body guy delivered my car to me yesterday, at my house no less and it looks fantastic! Final bill was $1350.00 and I know he cut me a deal on it. Just wanting to let you guys know that if you've got a red Lexus and you need paint work done, make darn sure the body shop does its research 1st and correctly costs out the paint because if they don't and spray it with something else, it isn't going to look right and you're not going to be happy with the result.

Thats a lot of coin to respray a rear bumper and drip rails. Any decent shop should have charged 300-$500

Even the best material out there does not cost $750 for a qt of paint. Theres nothing special in a 3 stage pearl paint shop they are just harder to match. But in your case your only doing a rear bumper and drip rails. That's not really doing any blending
