Default Does your steering wheel (airbag cover) feel hollow ?

On my 08 when I started detailing the car I noticed pretty quickly that the airbag cover on the steering wheel has a lot of "give" to it if you lightly push on it, mainly under the L logo.

I never thought for a second that Lexus would of designed it this way so I actually called and texted the previous owner of my car and started asking/accusing him if the airbag has been removed from the car cause it feels hollow.

But from searching online now I can see that many of them seem to have a wear mark indicating the same thing.

Mine does now have any visible lines or indentations but when I press on it , it makes a line in the same area as these ones, so im hoping im okay and this is just part of the design?

These photos are not of my car just ones I found online

That's the mark left when you get really pissed at someone and instinctively slam your palm into the center of the steering wheel to honk the horn, LOL

Yea but on every other car ive had there is no empty space behind the airbag cover to allow any sort of dent

Basically I'm trying to find out if my car has had the airbag removed or if this is part of the design

I think it's "normal". Fwiw, my Jaguar XF had a dented Jag emblem in the steering wheel because the previous owner just ignorantly punched it to honk the horn.

Thanks man, I'm really happy to see that I might of been wrong all along and this is just how the wheel is designed

I became obsessive about thinking that my car had been an accident car, but it didn't add up because everything appears to be original OEM including the paint.

If it makes you feel better you cannot remove the airbag and reinstall the cover. The airbag unit and the cover are one piece, if you want to replace the cover you have to replace the airbag, if you want to replace the airbag you have to replace the cover, and vice versa.

So there's no way they could have removed the airbag and reinstalled the cover.

Great , that's very reassuring then

I thought the airbag had been deployed and then they replaced it with just a "cover" , but seems that's not possible then

I even told the previous owner I wanted to be reimbursed $2000 on the price because of this, and was giving him a bit of a hard time

I'm going to call him to apologize

Thanks guys

1994-96 C4 Corvettes do this as well - a vertical line forms through the emblem at the center of the airbag cover on every one.
