Guessing your temp is in the 30's, or below?

I get this message is one of our cars whenever the outside temp is 36 or lower. It's just a warning that the temp is low enough for the road surface to freeze.

^^That

Many cars have been showing that message for about 20 years. Surprised this is your first time seeing it.

As I recall it comes up anytime the exterior temperature is 37 or below (could be 36).

My warning came on this morning when it was about 37 degrees outside. It makes sense that the warning would be triggered when the air temperature is still several degrees above freezing because, even if the air temperature is above freezing, the pavement can be colder, which could mean that there is the possibility of ice on the road surface.

I live in Arizona and have never seen ice on the roads but I have seen the warning on cold mornings - I always find it amusing. And I lived twenty years where there was ice on the roads and didn't need to be advised of the potential by my car.

I have had several Toyotas that did the same thing at the 37 degree point. I think it is a brand design rather than a function of the car's price.

I'm sure that there are quite a few safety features on modern cars that I don't "need" but that are still nice to have. I probably shouldn't need to have a blind spot monitor to know when it is safe to change lanes or a rear cross traffic alert to know if it is safe to back out into a roadway, but those things are nice tools to have available.

With regard to the warning that roads could be icy, I think back to a day in December 15 years ago. When I left my house, which is up on a ridge, there was a steady drizzle. I checked the temperature at the house, and it was about 40 degrees. The driveway wasn't icy, and I didn't give much thought to the possibility of ice on the roads. When I got down into the valley about a mile from the house, where the air temperature and the temperature of the pavement were a few degrees colder, there was glare ice on the road surface. While I'll admit that I should have, on my own, considered the possibility that the temperatures could have been low enough to cause freezing down in the valley, perhaps, if I had had a warning on the vehicle's dash, I might have been reminded of the possibility of an icy road surface and I might not have needed to call a wrecker to pull the vehicle out of the creek next to the road.

Whether I absolutely need them or not, I'm happy to have any safety-related features that might be available on a vehicle.

I certainly agree with you on the need for a blind spot monitor and the cross traffic alert as well as braking assist, seat belt tensioners. All should be available and probably required on today's new cars.

Before ordering my current Lexus ES 350 I felt that I had to look at and drive the Tesla. A great car but no cross traffic alert was a deal breaker - that and the $84K cost.
