Default Just replaced the air box in my 2005 ES330

@#$#$%$& Is it supposed to be so D*MN difficult??? I fought with this thing all morning. Getting the old one out wasn't too bad except for the harness clip on the bottom (is this really necessary??), but getting the new one in was a nightmare.

1. The new box would not line up with the bolt holes in the bottom. I pulled it out and put it back in several times and could not see what was keeping it from going into place, even with a super bright LED flashlight. Finally, something gave and it went into place. I quickly put the bolts in and moved on.

2. No matter what, I could not get the top in place with the backside hose attached. I finally removed it and then for some reason, with the 2 front guides in place, the back did not line up with the bolts. I finally just aligned the bolts and screwed it down. It looks OK as far as I can tell so it will stay that way.

3. If you've never put that short hose in place with the top on the air box, don't go there unless you absolutely have to. I almost pulled the top back off but manged to get it on after much sweat and cussing.

4. I managed to drop a short piece of vacuum line down between the engine. After another round of sweating and cussing I managed to fish it out with a piece of double sided tape on the end of a fishing magnet. I got lucky on this one.

No doubt I went about this all wrong but none the less I now have a greater appreciation for those who do this for a living.

Amen

What was wrong with the original air box? And where did you source the replacement part?

Yep, I hate the airbox design starting with the Gen 5 Camry and 4ES. Its just too tight in there to get the airbox to come off smoothly and align properly. Lots of times the edges of my air filter would stick out the box after sealing it down. Additionally you now require tools instead of hand snaps.

Here's the story. WARNING, contains a fair amount of stupid.

The front left bolt was snapped off when I bought the car a couple of years ago. The top of the box was cocked so I knew the seal wasn't good. I ASSumed the nut was molded into the box. I found a brand new one on eBay for 60 bucks and ordered it. It took me awhile to get around to changing it. When I finally got the box out and flipped it over I immediately saw that my ASSumption was wrong. All I needed was a new nut and bolt as the nut was only pressed into the plastic. Lesson learned, 10 idiot points earned.
