Default 2014 GS350 AWD - front brake pads and rotors cost

I recently purchased a secondhand GS350 AWD. It hit 30k miles so I took it to the dealer to get the 30k miles maintenance done. They found that front brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced.

Price they quoted was $650 for the front pads and rotors not including the maintenance fee. I wasn't expecting to have anything changed, I just went in for regular maintenance. Anyways, I agreed to pay $650 for the pads and rotors. After giving them the go ahead I started looking online to get an idea of how much it should cost. I quickly realized I was paying a lot more than I should.

Any thoughts from you guys?

Thanks Frotiss, I'll keep you in mind next time I need to have repairs done. You have a workshop?

Yes, water under the bridge but I wanted to get an idea of estimated cost for future reference. Now I know they charge more than usual and that is how I will deal with them.

well.. it's dealer pricing and it's normal.. you did get free donut/coffee and a loaner car out of it.. so that's ~$50 right there.

Funny, i just bought a second hand 2013 GS350 in NY and just did my 30k maintenance on it. They ALSO said my brakes were running low and advised replacing the rotors and brake at $650. I politely declined and said i wanted to find other brake pad alternatives.
What i would have done was check the rotor lips to see if it was within spec. I checked mine and felt it was absolutely unnecessary to change rotors, just brake pads were needed. Needless to say, I will be bringing it to a different place to get them done. I have swapped brakes and rotors before in the past by myself but didn't want to do it on the lexus yet...

The Lexus has the easiest pads to change on any car I've owned. Do it yourself and save a ton of cash. Should cost less than $100 depending on the pads you buy...

It is indeed very easy to swap out the pads on these GS's. Just follow this DIY:

Thanks for the link, I can probably do it in my sleep after changing brakes and rotors 8 times in all my vehicles lol. With the Lexus i was just a bit weary of doing it myself after having a jack fail on me the last time i got under a car (thank god for jack stands)... thanks for the suggestion though, I have thought about doing it myself since i already have all the tools.

The dealers will tell you anything. When my wife took her Accord to get its inspection and oil change they told her she needed new brakes in the rear (drums). That was four-five years ago. Still on the same pads and drums.

Why not do the brakes yourself? It's very simple and can be done for pretty cheap. I spent less than a $100 when I did the rear brakes on my wife's GS350. If you can't do the work yourself go to a reputable independent mechanic as they are MUCH cheaper than the dealer.

You should do them yourself. I've done many brake jobs in the past--drums and discs and I was shocked how easy they've made it for this car! It's easier than changing the oil, you don't even have to take the caliper off anymore. It took me more time to get out my tools and put them away than it did to change the front pads, I was totally amazed! You can do it!

BTW, We bought our CPO 2014 GS350 with 19,000 miles on it. I'm sure it had the original pads. Fast forward 25 months and now with 59,000 miles the old pads still had, in my estimation, 5000 of material (I love me some disc brakes!) It appeared that the fail-safe wear warning had produced a few squeaks, I changed the front pads. The discs were well within tolerance with minimal lip. Need to replace the rotors at 30,000 miles? It's possible but not likely. You don't need to replace the rotors at every pad replacement--otherwise why would they engineer that little access window into the caliper?
