Default Totalled?

Got in accident today(I was not at fault). I was just me in the car, but I am okay. Guy tries to cross 2 lanes of traffic and didn't see me in the outer lane so he slammed into me.

Just curious as this was my first Lexus if anyone here thinks the damage is enough for a total loss. The whole passenger front end looks messed up and the passenger front axle is either bent or broken. No airbags deployed. It seems like a ton of damage!

body panels are easy. if that suspension pushed in anything in the engine bay, it might be a different story.

Pretty good hit. He's right about the engine bay. Good luck

I'm going to guess that they won't total it out.

It won't be a total. I remember having a similar hit with my RX-8, $14K in damages and no total. The airbags never deployed that was the cause. But hey, who knows.

Hard to say but looks like that pillar is going to need some slight pulling. Bench time isn't cheap. I'd vote totaled. But close.

I've seen totaled ISs (and other similar cars) on copart with WAY WAY WAAAAAY less damage.

I know the insurance companies used to have a threshold of 40%, meaning, if the repair cost exceeded 40% of the car's current value, it is a total loss. I don't know if they still use that metric. My folks had a '14 Accord that had the doors and B pillar caved in and they fixed the car. That was a $12K repair. It does not show up on CarFax and it was done through insurance at an insurance company recommended body shop. Their damage was a bit less than yours, but then, your car is worth about $10K more. I think it's close, but I don't think yours will be totaled.

If it were me I would want it totaled. You're going to take a huge hit on reselling it. Not to mention the unforeseen problems you might have down the road.

I hope it is. Mainly because I don't want any issues later on down the road. Pictures don't do it justice it looks a ton worse in person people say. The place that towed it said its done. But we will see. I had it towed to Lexus for estimates. Here's a better pic of the front end.

Yeah. I wouldn't say the front is messed up beyond belief. A headlight, some fender and some trim.

Beyond belief would be the entire car curled up into a ball after an encounter with a big rig. Steering wheel in the trunk kind of wreck. Many of those occur every day.

It's at Lexus now waiting on repair estimates. Most people that have seen the damage say that it's not the cosmetic damage that's going to cost a lot it's the mechanical because of where it was hit. A guy at Lexus said typically the total loss % is around 60% when its somebody else's insurance because with damage like that it will never drive the same and potentially could be more cost effective to total it rather then keep having to make claims for the next few years. Not sure how accurate this is but should find out this week. It's leased so I'm not too worried about value as Lexus will take the hit when my lease reaches maturity. Thank you all for your advice and help by the way!
