Question F-Sport Paddle Shifters-What kind of clutch technology

Hi,

I have a 2013 RX 350 F-Sport. I tend to use the paddle shifters on the vehicle and was wondering what kind of clutch does the vehicle use is it the Dual Clutch as with VW or Audi or some other type of clutch technology?

Thanks, Ash

I was curious too, so I looked around. I didn't find any info on what specific sort of trans we have, so I looked up parts on a Lexus parts site. It says we have a torque convertor... Old school...

"Tiptronic" is a registered trademark owned by Porsche. However, the transmission it describes is in fact a traditional torque-convertor automatic with the option to use manual controls. There's no dual clutch technology in our trans.

It is not Tiptronic but very similar to it...but it is not dual-clutch

A Tiptronic (or Sportmatic, or Steptronic, or any number of marketing names for it) is a type of automatic transmission that allows the driver to shift gears as they would with a manual transmission.
It's different from a computer controlled manual transmission in that it does allow automatic shifting, uses a torque converter instead of a clutch, and the driver doesn't have full control over which gear the car is in. The car will still upshift and downshift on its own in manual mode when certain parameters are reached - for example it won't let you exceed the engine's redline, and it will shift down into first when you come to a stop.

https://www.quora.com/Whats-the-diff...-transmissions

A Tiptronic transmission works in an opposite style, adopting manual characteristics to an automatic gearbox by allowing the driver to select gears manually, overriding the computer that controls normal shifting and using a torque converter instead of a clutch.

As posted above, you have a vanilla-flavor torque-converter automatic.
All buttons do is hint the transmission which gear to be in.

You put the quora thread post in the roll-call thread. Anyway, we all agree that it is a torque convertor trans with manual controls, same idea as a Porsche Tiptronic. But let's quit calling it a Tiptronic.

Edit: Did a Mod move that post over here from the other thread? Too bad that's not indicated somewhere cuz it makes me look like I have poor reading comprehension skills.

the paddles are just range limiters and behave the same exact way as in my IS350.

The paddle shifters are just electronic signals. Everything is drive by wire. All electronic. All controlled by Logic controllers.

Gone are the mechanical linkages.

The transmission is a standard torque converter automatic. The "manual" shift mode simply limits the top gear. It doesn't rev-match on downshifts either. You tap it down, enjoy the lurch. I thought maybe they'd put the Sports Direct Shift tune into the F-Sport when they put in the 8-speed, but they didn't.

One of a few reasons I no longer have one.
