I've got a call from the dealer saying the acessory pulleys need to be replaced. Any one had this done yet?

I have sort of been waiting for someone to post this as I didnt want to be the one to do so.

The recall is going to be "8LA - Drive belt pulley recall".

A couple of weeks ago I posted in the first valve spring thread about having a similar issue, but I never disclosed what it was. Turned out that there was a flaw in the casting of a drive belt pulley that caused it to crack. I didnt want to disclose this because I wasnt sure what was going to become of it. Apparently they made a recall out of it.

So far there have been 19 cars nationwide that have had a failure. Im assuming that number includes the vehicle I worked on.

So far we havent had a car come in for the recall, but it just came out on Monday. I would just call your dealer to make an appointment. I wouldnt be too worried about them shattering on you. They will definitely make some noise before it lets go. Also, Lexus is recalling roughly 29,000 LS460s (both SWB and LWB). Those numbers usually greatly excede the number of cars that are likely to have a failure in my opinion.

So far I have not been able to find any information about this online. You can call your local Lexus dealer to see if it applies. Notices should be in the mail now or shortly. If you have no luck with either of those, I will be happy to run your VIN number through out database to see if it applies.

i have seen a shattered one on the first ls460 sold here at my dealership. No major damage to the engine, just had to clean up all the little pieces and replace the 2 pulleys and the drive belt.

though you know I am all for full disclosure, in this I think you did the right thing in waiting, unless you had prior seen it mentioned and the author was being given the business over posting like currently here and there over valve springs (<--I think those are next recall myself), but since not you did the right thing.

so that people know what you mean by making some noise before they really are gone, would that be an occasional screeching sound?

I believe its just the 2007 LS.



The vehicle I had was making a 'tapping' or 'knocking' noise at idle. I have a video of it somewhere that I can post. Ill see if I can find it and host it on youtube or something. I really did think it was some type of internal engine noise. Turned out to just be a cracked pulley.

In VIN cuttoff....the first digit to right of last letter reading left to right, indicates the year built I believe so if it is a 7 in VIN cutoff then likely only 07 or late 07 built 08 models.

I just scanned over the campaign again, and it looks like just 2007 Model Year LS460's.

Here are the VIN ranges:

SWB- JTHBL46F*75000133 - JTHBL46F*75044525

LWB- JTHGL46F*75000112 - JTHGL46F*75018704

Just look at the last 7 digits of the VIN number. Based on SWB or LWB, see if your vehicle falls BETWEEN those VIN ranges, not before or after. If the VIN is between, it should qualify for the campaign. Of course, you will need to call your Lexus dealer to confirm this.

Hopefully, Lexus will replace the stamped units with forged units. Good to see them address this issue expiditiously.. Question: Are the connecting rods in the LS460 motor forged or stamped?
