VW may sell Bugatti, Lambo After Porsche Takeover
VW may sell Bugatti, Lambo
11 January 2007
Volkswagen Group could dispose of its high-end supercar brands Bugatti and Lamborghini, according Porsche boss and VW supervisory board member Wendelin Wiedeking.
When asked about the fate of the two brands in an interview with an industry newspaper, Wiedeking is quoted as saying ‘no toys anymore’.
The move, which was flagged up as a possibility in an Autocar Analysis (3 January 2007), would help VW restructure its sprawling business and concentrate on reviving the VW brand as a true global player.
Wiedeking is also reportedly unhappy that Porsche is not the flagship brand in the group and has allegedly commissioned an ultra-high-performance Porsche supercar to break the top speed record set by the Bugatti Veyron.
Industry rumours suggest Bugatti could be downgraded to an ultra-exclusive coachbuilding operation once Veyron production is wound up.
Lamborghini, which sold over 2000 cars last year, could be sold off in the same way that Ford is currently disposing of Aston Martin.

I'm confused by your title. How could Lambo, which is owned by VW, be looking at taking over a company like Porsche, which is, I'm pretty sure far larger and richer than it?
Can a company like lambo even think about acting independently and taking over another company before it's even spun off by its current parent company?

Selling Bugatti is understandable because it's just a "trophy wife" for VW's czar Ferdinand Piëch and nobody can put it better than Wendelin Wiedeking -- "no toys anymore". The only "good" thing that's coming out of Bugatti's ownership is that it sort of showing that VW group has the experience and technology to build some of the fastest exotics in the world.
But Lambo? Aren't they making pretty decent money? Will they really make a better business case by selling it? Is it just another German-ego driven decision because Porsche-head Wendelin Wiedeking wants his own son to be the best of his family with a lot of other "adopted children"?

Porsche has diversified recently (Cayenne, Cayman, upcoming Panamera).
May be it has some plans for cars in the Lamborghini range and it is cramping up it future style. That is too bad for the privileged few that can afford them - it seems they became more of a competitor to Ferrari than they were in the past.
