How to Fix Cupholder Ejection - Pictorial
I have a habit of opening everything that is broke. For some reason I didnt do it when I had this problem on my cupholder about 1.5 years ago. I bought a new cupholder ashtray assembly and went on my way. One day I was about to put a drink in the holder and the frickin door would not eject. I knew after just replacing it that there was no way it could be broke. It was brand new for only $25 on Ebay. Steal! So I went on my way of figuring out what was wrong. What I found was one of the easiest fixes of all time. So here goes.
This guide is for you if your cupholder does not eject automatically like it used to. AND, its not because of a broken arm ring thingamajig (technical term).
*Drop the shifter, dont forget parking brake!*
1. Remove cupholder/ashtray assembly.

1. Remove cupholder/ashtray assembly.
a. Pop woodgrain around shifter.
b. Remove lower screws securing the unit.
c. Remove the cosmetic black radio ring (stock only)
d. Remove upper screws from the unit

4. As best you can, slide the cupholder out from the default position like so.
5. There are two black tabs that prevent the cupholder from over-extending. They are also blocking us from getting to the source. Remove the screw on each side and carefully set the tabs aside.
*This is my old cupholder so ignore the broken arm*

At last. We have located the source
Flip it over and you should see this. I have circled the problem as you see here. They kinda remind me of old school film.

What we have here is two different spinning mechanisms. The lower one with the copper coil has a "hammerhead" like hook on the end that came loose from the upper spinning mechanism. In this pic I have stretched out the coil that "powers" the eject process.

1. You have to pop the woodgrain around the shifter.
2. Remove black cosmetic insert at the bottom of the stock radio (if necessary).
3. This reveals 4 screws total to remove the cupholder (2 on the top, 2 on the bottom).
