No, dark fluid is not a for sure sign. Burnt fluid is though and metal shavings. It could be that it hasn't been changed in a long time. And remember when you change the fluid, only about half of it...

When you say it doesn't turn on, do all the dash lights come on...

5800 is really good for that year and mileage. These are great cars, you will be really happy with it.

Welcome and congrats on the purchase. These cars don't have any problems, they are built like w123 Mercedes.

But since your car is a 1999 I would check to see of the timing belt and water pump...
