That is most likely your oil control valve on the passenger side for the VVTi. I had the exact same issue...change that out before you do anything else.

1995 is a non-interference engine, so I don't believe that you would have been able to bend any valves, even if the timing was off. And yes, if the timing was off, the engine would not be running...
