it was mostly well maintained, and by that classic of all lines - two old ladiesin La Jolla CA. Unfortunately for us the dealership that worked with them was not very good about following guidelines...

you can buy an inexpensive OBDII scanner for $50 or so. These will also allow you to erase the codes to see if the problem is re-occuring.

I chose my words poorly. What I should have said is that irregular pad deposition on the rotor can often be misdiagnosed as warped rotors. Rotors can warp but misdiagnosis is more common.

Not to be rude, but conventional wisdom is that rotors do not warp. Instead what happens is that they get a asymmetric buildup of brake pad residue which causes the vibration we feel in the steering...

Definitely not black. Brown to gold to yellow is the expected color. But be sure to wipe off any oil/dust build up that might have been attracted to the outside of the container.
