I had a similar problem on my 97 ES300. At first, there was no CEL. After a week, CEL came on. It turns out it was a faulty EGR position sensor. $30 part and 5 mins to replace.

You will need 4 qts of Toyota T-IV fluid, a 10mm hex, and the crush washer for the drain bolt.
The job will take 10 mins depending on how good you are.

Its common to have a cracked flex pipe on older vehicle. It is time to cut out the old cracked one and weld in a new one. There is no need to replace the entire front exhaust.

My 97 ES300 hit +280k miles on original transmission, engine, starter, PS pump, alternator.
Bare in mind that we have salt on our streets / highway which makes rusting common.

To reset your ECU, pull the EFI fuse for 10-20 seconds.

But you should check what the CEL is telling you (and fix / replace) whatever is broken.
