As far as I know there is just a gasket unless they add some kind of RTV sealant to ensure a tight fit.

If I were you, I would drop the pan and change filter/fluid. Now is the time to do it.

The only other reason i have heard of the timing...

The only other reason i have heard of the timing belt "walking" is because of an issue with the tensioner making belt too loose. I hope you changed yours...if you did then you must have cam gears...

I think you may have answered your own question. It's so you dont have to go back and forth. One guy can stay under the car and do the drain and fills, while the other person is in the car running it...
