About the cat, yes you would still get a code. The code is set by the computer reading the oxygen sensors. So if the exhaust gas is not being filtered, it will throw off a warning code.

Good to know. I've experienced this on a family member's vehicle and also noticed that the latch needed periodic lubrication. I wonder what causes this problem.

After multiple wheel changes and test drives, I was able to find the bad wheel.

This is just another reason why having two sets of wheels is great....
