1- roof motor

2- all the seals

3- ABS electronic pump

4- electronics

5- engine suspension parts

6- TPMS sensors

7- HID bulbs

8- etc ..

overall, my 03 w/30K has so far been bulletproof with no
issues unlike my German Benz

My SC is an '04 with 55K miles on it. Although I have only owned it for one year, I have experienced basically no problems...just minor maintenance kind of things. Had a LS400 that I owned for 14 years. Other than the 100K service which I did, I don't recall ever spending a penny on it. Only replaced the battery one time. I don't expect the service on the SC to be any different. Truth is, I'll fix whatever goes wrong with mine...one of the most fun cars I've ever owned.

I have an 2001, 114K miles.

Here's my thoughts to you questions:

1- roof motor - No, don't see those failing.

2- all the seals - No, but perhaps passenger side quarter seal (which is a known issue for wind noise... it has partially torn on mine but I live with it)

3- ABS electronic pump - No

4- electronics - No, but I have plans to replace Nav & Stereo systems.

5- engine suspension parts - No, but may put 3rd party suspension (non-engine) in of my own accord anyway.

6- TPMS sensors - The batteries in my TPMS ran out in 2012 (IIRC. They are rated to last 8-10 years or so) and therefore I had them removed on the next Tyre change (with the thought I would replace them myself. Alas they are epoxied in so need a full replacement). I have plans to source OEM's off Amazon and have them fitted on the next change of boots.

7- HID bulbs - Nope, but they will wear out eventually and will be replaced like any consumable in due course.

8- etc .. Battery. I change battery every 4-5 years, but they do need maintenance to last this long.

All in all, it's a cheap car to keep going. I do much of the work myself or have it done at a small independent. I stopped using Lexus dealers whereever possible circa 2012 but only do very low mileage now since then.

....of everything that you listed, the top will probably be the most expensive repair, that is,if you ever had an issue with it. My 02 has 234k (I mentioned in a post last week 243K,had those last #'s backwards) & I've had no major issues. The car has had 2 timing belt services, 3 batteries (factory & 2 replacements), a radiator, a/c compressor & an alternator......so I'm not complaining at all. The last time I drove it, I could hear a noise coming from the front left, but you only hear it when the car is in motion, so I'm thinking a front hub bearing. I'll look into it after all this rain is over

of course it will need repairs and maintenance as it ages - it IS a car, after all. But as a Toyota vehicle it should need fewer repairs and they should be cheaper and easier than a lot of other cars. I laugh at the ads about "German engineering"

Germans haven't built anything with an eye to easy repairs since the original bugs. They seem to try to make their cars so that nobody can accomplish do-it-yourself repairs and they definitely need repaired much more frequently than Japanese cars. I was seriously looking at SLs and SLKs when I decided on my SC430, and the fear of trying to maintain a Mercedes was the deciding factor.

I don't know about the States, but here in Australia, it's a known thing that the 2 Cars that Mechanics hate the most are, Honda & Toyota, because they hardly see them in for repairs. I've had 3 Mercedes, & it was time for the Lexus that we have now.

My 1991 LS400 last 343K, still has no major repair. Sold it for 2500 bucks. My 2007 Corolla now has 220K (I drive it 8-10 hours a day, average 100 miles of city street driving), also has no major. My wife's 2007 Prius, also has 215K (she drives 90 miles a day, mostly freeway), and never in the shop for repair, except for routine maintenance. My 2007 SC now with 60K, no problem what so ever. Just oil change and routine maintenance. So you can see why I love Toyota products.

texsexlex, not to jack the thread, but how are your foglights and the associated wiring holding up?

I recall years ago you had posted instructions on how to allow the foglights to turn on WITHOUT the headlights... and I was VERY tempted to have my mechanic perform the mod, but alas he talked me out of it, saying "you'll have electrical issues due to the additional drain, etc".
