How many miles is too many?
Hi, folks.
I'm looking to join your elite club.
Prices on these 430s are pretty closely tied to the mileage, and I'd like to get a sense of what is considered high mileage. Inherently the number is fairly high for a Lexus, but there are still thousands of parts that are subject to wear.
If I want a car I can take on 300 mile road trips without much fear of breaking down along the way, what's a reasonable number to shoot for mileage wise?

Not necessarily going off of a SC430, sorry.
BUT, My GS300 has 220k and was taken on trips all the time. My LS430 did numerous 300+ mile trips at 240k on it. I would personally just have the car inspected by a mechanic before you buy if you don't feel comfortable, it really depends on how the car was taken care of before it hit your hands.

The SC430 was rated as one of the most reliable cars a while back. Most of the high mileage owners find that to be so also but you just have to be alert because it is an aging car and parts start deteriorating with age and wear.
BTW, welcome to the forum.

Bought mine at 111K
As in the title, I bought my 430 with 111,000 miles on it. It had the 120k service already done at a Lexus dealer, all service records at Lexus dealers, runs like a charm, everything works, and it looks brand new.
That said, my SC300 has 105K, but a lot of it was driving 2.8 miles to work and back. So I put 10 times the wear on things like the doors, sliding on and off the seats, the starter, ignition switch, and everything you use each time, than someone who drove 28 miles to work. Plus I hardly warmed the engine sufficiently to burn off acids in the oil and exhaust, etc.
It still runs and looks great, but it has lots of little typical Lexus SC things wrong with it, like the steering wheel no longer goes up and down, the gauge lights are partially out, the high-pressure power steering line leaks, the temp sensor inside is intermittent so the heat and AC are flaky, on and on. Not worth fixing them all.
So, mileage isn't everything, but it's rare to know the actual history of a potential purchase, so mileage is what we go by.
