Adventures in backup light LED conversion

Alright this last bit should put the whole thing to rest.
The Sylvania 7443 bulbs that I picked up at Autozone work in the back-up lights in their brightest mode.
However, the brightest mode doesn't use all of the LEDs.
Dim mode
Bright Mode
Operating on the car (no modification to the bulbs)
I'll keep mine in there until I find ones I really like, but I would not recommend these.
After I replace them, perhaps I will use them in the brake lights, though. Their bright, uniform lighting would likely work great for that since the light doesn't need to throw very far.

Indeed. I am about to order the set that BGW70 posted (but from the US seller) and a set of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-W21W-74...9Wi3EG&vxp=mtr
And see which one I like best. 7440s are also used for the turn signals, so the less bright ones can be used in there, anyway.

You are correct. I completely missed that. They are indeed 7443. Note that there are 4 contacts. A 7440 will only have 2. Glad you caught that before I bid!
Geez... I think I need to go to bed. I am striking out all day today.
it also shows that we can't simply trust bulb sellers on ebay and probably even Amazon. We need to know exactly what we are looking for.

Let's try this from a different approach and see what the name brand companies have to offer since many of these bulbs have names we have never heard of... When Retro introduced the Sylvania, I decided to look at their website to see what they offered.
They do not offer everything but they have some bulbs in LED.

I'll add that finding the perfect bulb should be based on some requirements (which probably vary per person.) For me, it would be:
1. Uniform brightness (ie. the whole lens fills with light
2. Wide enough angle to light up the ground on the sides of the car since I live in the city and everything is narrow here.
3. A decent amount of casting. I should be able to see the light on the ground from the center rear view mirror
4. A high enough beam that it would illuminate a person standing behind the car. but not so high, it shines in people's house windows
5. Bonus: a pretty 'cutoff'.
A few of those requirements would actually require changes to the lens housing. A bulb by itself couldn't really do all those things. But a decent balance between those features would be nice. So far I have really not impressed with any I have seen, but I think it is due more to the assembly on our cars and the location of them.
