Default SC430 Spare Tire

Hello all! Thought I might help other SC430 members ( especially new owners ) with a true story.

Bought our SC430 a few years ago. The previous owner(s) had replaced the run-flats with regular tires and put a spare tire in the trunk. The spare was not a upgrade kit because there was no tire cover and the carpeted tool cover was hand cut to fit around the spare tire. No concerns, everything looked OK. Lucky for us, we never had a flat and reason to use the spare.

As per my usual routine, I pulled the spare tire out to make sure it was at the recommended 60 PSI mark. Those spares usually drop a few PSI each year. From having read a lot about owners switching to non-run flats and adding a spare tire, I immediately noticed that the tire size was wrong! It was a 125x70 D 16, way wrong! Next I tried it on the car. The worst case scenario is the front, due to the size of the brake calipers. The bolt pattern was OK but the wheel came into solid contact with the brake caliper long before the lug nuts secured the wheel against the hub. No way was this going to work.

Closer inspection of the spare tire and wheel found that the wheel is actually a Nissan wheel and the center hub was not the Toyota / Lexus 60.1 mm diameter but the Nissan 66.1 mm hub diameter.

Needless to say I immediately found a spare tire / wheel assy with the correct 145x70 D 17 tire, the 114.3 mm 5 lug bolt pattern and the correct 60.1 mm hub diameter. Hopefully I never need it but it is there ready to go, just in case.

Bottom line for any owner that is not sure, pull the spare tire out of the trunk, check the tire size, check / add air to the 60 PSI mark and try it on a front wheel position. This can be done by the garage during tire rotation, etc. Better safe than stranded.

Your post got me thinking about getting one, since I just got the car a couple weeks ago. I am glad you checked and got that corrected before waiting for something bad to happen!

I am looking to buy one if you guys are able to point me in the right direction. I have the jack and tools in the trunk, but no tire. I think Ill end up using my Tbird jack, which is much beefier and does not require a separate bar to use; its already attached. Gotta fix that spare situation quickly, with all the driving I do!

I bought my 430 a few months ago and this the spare tire that I got with it. I haven't tried it yet, cast alum Ford but has the right bolt pattern. Just throwing it out there.

You'll want to try it on both the front & rear wheels to make sure it clears the brake calipers - even if the bolt pattern matches, the depth of the offset may not be enough to clear the SC's brakes. Better done in the driveway vs on the side of the road and you find out it doesn't clear.

Here is a link to a decent wheel info page for comparison between different vehicles :
http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-r...#axzz3gIAWSXvP

The wheel you want has a 5 bolt pattern with 114.3 mm ( or 4.5" ) diameter, a high offset and the 60.1 mm center hub diameter. While the Ford wheel might fit, there will be a gap around the center hub and the wheel will be centered via the 5 tapered lug nuts and counter sunk wheel holes. Getting a wheel with the 60.1 mm center hub ( Toyota / Lexus ) will eliminate this centering issue.

While I went with the Lexus 145x70 D17 tire size, this spare tire has a diameter is 25.0". The 245x40R18 Eagle GT's on the car have a diameter of 25.6". Interestingly enough, late model Camry's have a spare tire in 155x70 D 17 size with the correct bolt pattern ( 114.3 mm ), a high offset, the correct 60.1 mm hub diameter and the overall diameter is 25.6 inches. Not positive if they will fit in the trunk with enough space to close the trunk lid but everything else looks good. Perhaps a SC430 owner with access to a Camry with this size spare could check for wheel and trunk fit and report back. These spare tires are plentiful and inexpensive ( > $90 on EBay ).

...hey Flop when you say "late model" what year are you starting with? 2012 & up or possibly an earlier model? I know where an 09' Camry is laying around & I might be able to get the spare out of it...lol...I actually have the spare from a g35, but have been fortunate enough to not have to use it

I believe that the 2007 and up Camry's had this size mini-spare. Earlier Camry's might have had it, depending on the cars' trim level. Definitely worth a shot.

I tried the spare tire out of my 2013 RAV4 XLE. The wheel was a perfect match with the bolt pattern, hub diameter and brake caliper clearance but the tire size was 165x 80 D 17, a bit too tall for the SC430 application, plus it would not fit in the trunk.

Hopefully the spare is still there. Keep us posted. If it fits over the brake calipers and in the trunk, it's the best deal out there. Every Lexus spare I saw was over $200.

I ended up with a 145 x 70 D17 spare from a 2015 Subaru WRX for $105. Perfect fit except the 57 mm hub diameter but a 2 3/8 inch ( 60 mm ) metal hole saw blade on my drill press, a file and some black spray paint solved that problem.

...I'll keep you posted....I do know that the spare is still there, because he had me take a taillight out of the Camry last week & I saw it mounted in the trunk.

I am going to check with Toyota to see if they can clarify that a newer Camry spare would bolt on. I am thinking of buying one soon, but if I can get a perfect fitting one at a cheaper price, then its mo money I can put toward my exhaust.

Thank you for all the great ideas everyone!!
