Maybe the spring has popped loose. Does the release switch (right below the tray cover) still spring back and forth?

I had the same affair with mine. The hole to catch the spring loaded keeper is molded into the lid, look at the lid......... has the plastic "hoop,catch " broken off ?
this thing is very fiddley.. I bonded a small wire loop to the lid to catch the keeper and keep the lid closed.

I broken my too, you can buy all plastic panel with coin box or any other part, here is number 35978-24010
