Default Bad Thermistor?

Wife's 2003 AC has been working / not working with no real pattern. I added freon, no help. Took into a shop (NOT dealer) and was told it is the thermistor on the evaporator. The shop I took it to will not do the repair, but recommended another shop. $1,400
Anyone have this issue or know of another cause / fix? The tech that looked at the car said if it was his he would get to the evap cover and cut hole in it and install thermistor in different location, to avoid pulling the entire dash)

See this thread for the "fix"

Was close to throwing my hands up and letting a shop do this, for $1500. Glad I didn't.
