Mark Levinson speaker replacement
I have a 2003 SC430 with two blown speakers, the dealer wants 450.00 to replace both of them.
Should I replace them with OEM or go to Best Buy and get an entire new set of speakers ?
TIA

Mark levin son is so exaggerated. I've owned 3 Lexus auto, rx330,gs430 and rx300. All tweeters and speakers have blown out in the first 3 months. Your better off upgrading tweeter and amp and adding 2 or 3 more speakers

What speakers are you looking for?
Front Tweets, Mid or Bass?
Rear?
Sub?
Some just go get ML replacements and they are happy. We have a CL discount with Sewell so you get a break.
A bunch of guys replaced front bass which normally die, with the Rockford Fosgate 6” Pro Punch. Do search and you will see a lot of happy customers. I just ordered mine yesterday.
The Sony’s that I put in as replacements, I am not happy with.
Good luck.

The key point you need to know is that there are not many speakers that have the correct ohm (resistance) that the system and the amps are made for. You can't just go to best buy and get speakers and expect the system to work right. You need 8ohm speakers, what the oem ML was.
x2 on the the Rockford fosgates. Also the sub that shawnok found and figured out how to wire is awesome and cheap. Kudo's go out to him every time I get in my car and turn the volume up.

I believe that there are 2 or 3 threads with instructions on how to remove the door panels. Search for wind noise or the triangle weatherstripping replacement.

Tore down the SC door panel to find out that the existing adapter that I bought from Crutchfield can not work with the Fosgates! The magnets are so huge! By the time I cut off the plastic adapter, nothing will hold the speaker!
So I am thinking of dumping the existing plastic housing and replace it with an aluminum plate for the mount. I checked the clearance in the back and it would clear the door channel. This is the cleanest way to install our Fosgates! And I bet you it is a robust mount.
Here are the pics of my trial

I just used the plastic adapter, much like the one you have, and used a dremel to make the magnet hole larger, and then affixed the modified plate to the OEM adapter plate that once held the ML speaker. There are two small tabs on the OEM plate that you will have to clip off, but it fit perfectly and the proper depth too. Less hassle then creating your own adapter plate from scratch. No need to reinvent the wheel. ;-)
UPDATE: ohh yeah and I had to use a small diameter lock nuts and bolts for the actual mounting of the speaker since there were no true screw "holes," after the modification of the adapter plate that lined up properly.

Same with me.
I rotated the speaker some, so the bolts were not at the top and bottom.
Took a little thought, but then my 9 year old daughter helped jigsaw out the new hole and do the bolts.
I think I posted pictures of this before....
I don't like the idea of aluminum due to the risk of vibration. I will try to find the pictures and post them again.

Well, here is a picture I posted before.
You can see that on your pic the original holes were at 12,3,6,and 9 o'clock. I moved this about 45 degrees so the bolts are where you can still hold onto something.
I just used some cardboard designed what I thought would work, cut it and made sure it fit right then cut out the adapter.
Used some rubber to seal and stop any vibration and screwed it together.
