Default Daytime running lights to 12000k HID?

Hello CL.

Ive seen people here change their stock yellow DRL to LED but I was rather thinking to change to HID. Now since the DRL and high means are the same light that means the HID must work with low power and high power. But then at low power (during the day = DRL) would probably still look yellow so I thought of going with 12000k color temperature HID (full hid conversion kit not just bulbs). And since 12000 is outputs less light than like a 5000k I could run with highbeams on at night and would look like regular lights except deep blue. Any ideas?

btw i just came from an Audi A8L (previous cars: supercharged GS300, GS430, G35) and I have a bunch of questions and ideas about this SC. Its an 02, white.

Any suggestions? Anyone running full HIDs on DRL?

It looks pretty quiet here on CL

I went the route of LED's rather than the HID, and I'm very happy with the change. The HID upgrade was a little more money then I wanted to drop and I'm very impressed with the results especially since I don't use the high beams at all. I'm also not sure what would happen since you'd have to run two different voltages through the ballast. I know in the case of fluorescent lighting (ceiling lights) that running a reduced voltage to the ballast won't even light the tube bulb. Not sure if this is the same situation with the HID ballasts, especially since it will run at a lower voltage when in DRL mode. Not sure if it would even light up...

Shawn that makes sense. But then if it doesn't turn on at low meaning during the day then that is fine also, have non is better than yellow as long as it turns on the high beams. Blister thank you I hope that's the case cause I have some minor issues with the car. I bought it as is cause it was a good deal.

Tell me CL just got a 02 SC430 87k miles for 11,500 clean title. Good deal? Considering.....

Issues: Driver door actuator (the automatic locking mechanism) doesn't work. Passenger's side is going bad too. (about a $100 fix)
Seats (back part) don't recline back far enough, maybe this is normal but I just took a pic i'll post in a thread somewhere so you guys can compare.
Gear shifter light doesn't come on, maybe needs a bulb.
Clock resets to 1:00 everytime engine starts. CL search reveals a bad car battery. ($90)
Passenger mirror won't go down but does side to side. ($100 for full mirror on ebay)
Rattling sound from airbag area (problem unknown)
Could use a leather redye (which is normal for an 02 but i want it anyway) ($250)

The picture in the post shows the parking lights, which can be easily changed out to LEDs. The DRLs are the high beams running at (I think) about 4v. This wouldn't be enough to run HIDs I've been told. I've thought of a possible solution with a couple of DPDT relays in the circuit. In DRL mode, lights could draw 12v through a relay from another always on source. Headlights on would trip relay, turning DRLs off. High beams on would trip relay back so that they'd pull 12v as they do now. The only problem with this is you're driving around with high beams on all day long.

O, and yes you can swap the DRLs out for LEDs which a number of people on here have done. Search for DRLs for info. But bear in mind with this option you lose the brightness of high beams. I swapped mine out but then swapped them back because I travel a lot of back roads at night and need high beams. And also, welcome!

Thank you Fubie. Ya I know driving with high beams on but thought with 12000 temperature it wouldnt put out enough light to blind anyone at day or night except would look really blue
