Default Problem with side mirrior tilt when backing up

At first the drivers side, side mirror would tilt as it should when backing up but when i got onto the street from my driveway wouldn't stop tilting up-words till it made a clicking noise that it wanted to keep tilting but couldn't. The only way to stop it was to adjust the side mirror manually and tilt it down and it would stop and stay at whatever i set it as. Now it just doesn't tilt at all.

Has anyone experienced this? What part numbers would i need to fix the problem? Does anyone have instructions on how to go about fixing this?

I drive a 2002 SC 430. HELP PLEASE

I had a similar problem with my passenger side mirror. The car was CPO at the time so the dealer replaced the whole mirror assembly including the housing.

thanks for the reply OBP

Does anyone know how much it might cost to replace the whole assembly on my Lexus? Or where i could look up the part numbers? My car came from a gov auction, so i don't think theres any type of warrantee included with my car. Especially since it was build 2002 =/ just my luck....

Go to Sewell Lexus Online. Register with your ClubLexus user name for special discount.

Looking at the site it looks like discounted price for drivers side ranges from $223-$490 depending on color. Passenger side about $360.

You must log on with your CL account to get discount price displayed.

Part number 87910 passenger side and 87940 driver side

Yes, this problem has shown up in the past. Do a search on the forum to find how folks have treated it. The problem is the plastic gears in the mechanisms wear out over time and die. The noise you were hearing was likely the gears trying to turn in a spot where a tooth broke off.

IIRC, someone purchased a rear view mirror and just replaced the guts of the old one with the purchased one.

Am I correct in assuming only the drivers side mirror tilts when the car is put into reverse or do both driver and passenger mirrors automatically tilt? Only my drivers does.

Both tilt on mine if the selector switch is either set to RT or LFT. If switch us set in middle neither mirror tilts.

I park on right side of my garage and I always use the tilt feature to make sure I clear the garage door frame on the right side, when backing out.

Both drivers side and passenger side on my 2002 SC tilts as well. But when going back on level ground and it tilts back to where its suppose to be it doesn't stop going. Till the gears start making a noise and i have to hold a the tilt button to set it back to where it should be.

FLYCT:: the part numbers you've listed, is that the same parts that include the motor?

Alrighty then......Looks like I have a motor out on the passenger side....Don't really think it's worth the hassle of deconstructing though.
