Rear End Clunk Revisited
Its been a while since there has been talk of the rear bushing fix for the SC430. I was one who had a very early production date and had the fix done on the rear end. As it turned out I posted and sent my service record and several people noted that the part that the dealer used was indeed a new part but I also found out that there was a newer version of the bushing then the one they used.
The point of my post is that the noise is back in the rear end, initially the fix cured the problem and the car was much more stable and solid over road imperfections. But that day has come and gone.
My question is, have other experienced this?(I seem to remember someone saying that they have been through several sets) and if you have can you send or post the parts numbers used in the fix.
Here are the parts listed for mine
TSB #0489, Ref # RS-01-001R
Re and Re Rear Sub-Frame, Replace Bushings
Parts,
2 Cushion (52271-24060)
4 Exhaust (90917-06078)

90917-06078 Gasket (4)
90177-10001 Nut (8)

How ironic DropTop430!
DropTop430-
I can't believe you brought this up right when I wanted to create a new post about it. Literally, I was logging in to try and dig up an old thread on the topic and there was your thread right on top. I was excited to see the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently started posting TSB's in .pdf form so you don't have to order them from NHTSA anymore. They are swamped with requests and it literally takes months to hear back from them.
Here's what appears to be the latest TSB on the matter dated January 18, 2002. (Note that the cushion # is different from what either of you posted.)
http://www.nhtsa.com/TSBScans/sb628659.pdf
The OLD TSB from November 9, 2001 has the cushion part number that you are refering to.
http://www.nhtsa.com/TSBScans/sb627149.pdf
If I'm reading this correctly, everyone with a VIN produced before JTHFN48Y#20022000 should get the cushions replaced. And if I understand the VIN correctly, all 430's built in 2000 and 2001 would need the repair, along with a lot of those built in 2002.
I'm assuming the # sign in the VIN on the TSB is a code for exterior color, which if I'm right, would suggest that the first 2000 of every SC430 in every color built in 2002 would be included in this cushion fix. For example, there is a 4 in my VIN where the # sign is, which probably stands for my Egyptian Sand exterior color.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, great ... they started replacing mine yesterday with the old bushing part number. When I pick up the car today (or tomorrow) I'll hand the service manager a copy of the first page of the TSB and ask him why the parts department ordered an old part. Cripes - the TSB is dated January!!

I'm not sure what's going on here, but my information is that 5227124060 is the second generation bushing used from Jan - Mar 2002 (see TSB SU004-1). 5227130080 is the third generation bushing introduced in April per TSB SU001-02.
But, it is also my understanding that Lexus always sends the latest part regardless of what your dealer orders.

Bought my 2002 white gold toy on Saturday (so it rained on Sunday and froze on Monday...) and got the first rear-end KLUNK on the speed bump 50 feet from my driveway. Called the dealer Monday, they said bring it in Wed for service. Then I found this forum -- good reading! -- and so I was all prepared with info, just in case.
Dealer took the car, replicated the problem, called me an hour later with details of what they needed to fix ("Rear bushings, huh, under warranty; good..."), finished it that day.
Oh, and yeah, it was a gorgeous, sunny day, what with the car in the shop.
Thank you for this discussion, & the whole CL forum. Lots of reading the last few days, my first post for my first Lexus.

I don't believe it will hurt the car, if you don't fix it. I had it done back then and I thought the difference in clunk levels was pretty slight. Most dealerships back then were aware of the TSB and made the fix without asking the customer.
Have Lexus pull up a service report on your car to see if it was done.
Have fun on your drive to Mpls.

Good timing with the post. Mine just started making clunking noises a couple of days ago.
I have a 2004 with only 25,000 miles but, may have caused the problem by jacking up the car by the rear end. The technician at Lexus told me it would be OK but the noises started immediately after.
I don't like jacking the car up by the area in front of the rear wheels. I would prefer to raise the car evenly. Once I jacked-up the car on one side, and one of the doors was very hard to close. Not sure if it was due to chassis flex but, I can't think of any other reasons. Don't really want to create flex on the roof, I just got the roof adjusted and roof noise reduced. My Wald kit also reduces the area for a jack and jackstand in the area in front of the rear wheels.
Does anyone have any suggestions for jacking-up the car evenly? Not too many options....
Thanks again,
Mark (da-bizket)

Mark, I generally jack up the rear with the rear end. The Blitz exhaust does make things too low for even my low profile jack so I use a smaller jack to lift a side up a tad and then jack it up the rest of the way under the pumpkin.
Chassis flex is common on cars not just open tops. Almost every car I have owned experienced this.
