Default Paint Peeling

I am in the market for some of the earliest SC430 and the several I've seen have all had paint which is starting to peel on the trunk and around the trunk center brake light.

Is it normal for the paint to peel on early SC430's?

I have seen much older Lexus GS's and ES's and none show signs of paint peeling like the older SC430's seem to.

Any thoughts?

I am wondering what it would take for the paint to peel on an SC430... is it not washing the car that causes it, or what?

Probably too much sun and too little paint protection measures.

Neglect. Some people should be shot. IMHO.

My 02 was built in March 01. It's first owner lived in Scottsdale, Az. where the car began its life in April 01. There are no signs of peeling paint anywhere on my car. But the hood and front bumper have normal wear and tear paint pits/nicks. It's live in San Diego near the beach and salt air since 05/2003 where its been garaged when not on the road.

yea ive never seen one with bad paint, these things were garage queens for the most part. For it to fade it needs to be a combo of outdoor parking in direct sun + never waxing the car.

I have an early '02 and like VVT it has some minor chips on the nose (the front ends are magnets for road debris) but no paint peeling or oxidation. I would wonder if the ones that you are looking at had any paint work done in the past.

My previous car was a 1998 GS400, I do wax it quite often, but I have to park outside most of the time and it does take a toll on the paint...

Bumper area peeling (see attached), maybe it is from people hitting me... I don't know, but the area between the windshield and sunroof is peeling too.

I guess over time these things does happen.

My guess is it's most likely caused by salt and chemicals dumped on the roads during winter. That combined with the owners not promptly washing it off. Luckily, I don't have that problem living in warmer climate.

That's not so bad. A 12 or 13 year old car left outside?

Nice car BTW. I like that color.

peeling paint = It's repainted with low quality body shop. Factory paint don't peel easy especially on a Lexus

Thanks for the input, I am thinking that indeed these cars were repainted due to damage and that's why they may be peeling now.

Hello! New here! I recently purchased an 06 SC430 with very low mileage, garage kept. I am the third owner. I took to car wash and as I was washing the front bumper, paint started peeling off. My mechanic friend said had probably been repainted with cheap paint after a fender bender...no undercarriage repairs, and other than that, car is perfect...
