Bump.... did you guys figure out what the 3 digits are for? I was in the dealership buying an RX350 (OK, wife was buying... I was loitering) and on her new and all the other cars in the showroom I noticed those 3 digits. Sales guy didn't know.... service guys didn't know.... it's a Lexus thing (at least... maybe Toyota too?), certainly not just certain models, as this thread thought initially

babaganoos...If you are buying a new RX....look through the windshield at the VIN plate that is attached to the instrument panel on the driver's side of the car....you will find that same 3 digit number written sideways just before the VIN starts.....my theory... and i stand to be corrected is that the 3 digit code is the numerical sequence in the production schedule that the vehicle is built in. So for example a vehicle could be on schedule 10 and be item 123...just a theory but thats the way General Motors used to build them many years ago when i was a student working in their assembly plant! Car manufacturers usually do not build their vehicles in the sequence of VIN numbers.

Oh, I know where the 3 digits are. just looking for the firm / accurate answer of what they mean. Based on your theory, why is it important enough to put on all the VIN labels?

For some reason, I remember hearing something about it as an identification for manufacturer plant number.
