Replace the idler arm with the timing belt?
When I was calling around for pricing to get my timing belt replaced for my '02, I got several different quotes with different amounts of work to be done. Some of them included changing out the idler arm, just because they were in there. (I don't think that the Lexus dealer included this.) While I can understand doing preventative maintenance and am generally in favor of it, does this make sense with the SC430? Have any of you run across this also? (I forget what the cost difference was, I'll have to go and find where I placed my notes a month ago, heaven help me!)
<><><>Update<><><>
The dealer changes the timing belt and the water pump for $1050.
An independent shop changes the timing belt, water pump, front engine seals, idler arm, pulleys (+?) for $1215
Another independent shop changes the timing belt, water pump, idler arm for $950
Toyota dealer replaces the timing belt and water pump for $750.

I'd see what the toyota dealer charges to change everything (idler, front seals, etc.) I think the largest component of the bill is labor, so as they say, while you're in there, change everything. Easy to say when it's not your money.....

I recently had my timing belt on my '02 replaced by Lexus. I figured I'd get a call while they were in it saying I needed pulleys, water pump or seals. To my surprise, they said everything looked good and just replaced the belt. Cost was $570.
I'm lucky because I have an extended warranty that's good for another three years/45k miles. If the water pump goes bad later and they have to go back in then it's covered by warranty.

shop lexus and toyota dealers for all services...I'd recommend all things replaced while they are in there for preventative purposes, unless you have an extended warranty still which I doubt on a 2002. I bet you can get them under $1k for it all and have a piece of mind. Some dealers have coupons...some Lexus dealers will even match or beat a toyota dealer price plus you get the loaner car, lexus experience blah blah cookies or whatever
