So I just spent the last 60 minutes trying to find out what Upgrade DVD I should get.
I am very confused.
I have a 2002 SC430

Can I use another generation?
What is the most current Navigation DVD? 7.1? 8.1?

I have found on ebay a Version 7.1, generation 2/3 for $63.95. Compared to all the other DVDs listed there this price seems WAY too good to be true.
Maybe in the long-run it's better if my navigation just shows me driving "off-road" sometimes...
This summer I am jumping in my car and "driving" for my vacation... possibly to the South... maybe "Route 66" to wherever... or I may end up at Yellowstone or just may never make it past Las Vegas. Reguardless, I think the most accurate and up-to-date GPS is a must.
So, would someone please help me before I get lost this summer???

Starryeyed - you must use the generation 2/3 type disk. 7.1 was released in late 2007 whereas 8.1 was released (october?) of last year - thus making it the most recent version. Def worth the money for the upgrade, just make sure that the disk is genuine Lexus!

Of course, you can always buy them from your dealer. Sewell Lexus offered them at a discount last fall to members of the forum. You might can still get it at a discount from them. It is not cheap though.

Also, beware of copied discs. A lot of those don't work.

The reason you have to watch out about the discs on eBay is because many times they are copies (or counterfeits), not genuine Lexus navigation discs. If you could be certain it's a genuine disc, opting for a 2006 or 2007 disc would be great thing because you could save big bucks that way. I just upgraded to the newest disc (8.1), and it cost me $250, and that was $50 dollars off the regular price of $300.00.

Here's the sewellpartsonline.com site where you can get the newest (2008) disc for $250.00. The 2009 disc will be out in October if you would rather wait. Just remember to put in the proper code to get the $50 off (Nav08). If you've got a 2002, you'll need the generation 2/3 disc.

Also, here's a link for determining what disc you need, based on the year/model of your Lexus.

I recently had mine updated at the dealership for $303.00 - parts and labor.

Not too bad...

the ebay discs will not work and will screw up your nav unless you get OEM disc on ebay. I did and it works fine.
I will say the 02 sc430 nav is highly inferior to any current Garmin nav, but it sure looks cleaner than a garmin on a stalk.

Why/how would a bad disc screw up the nav? I could see it not working, but how could it damage anything?

when it installs, it erases your old data and it's impossible to go back to your original disc at that point. just write and ask the seller if it's an OEM disc. check his feedback too. If you get it and it's a copy, demand your money back and leave neg feedback if you have to. most likely, it is an OEM disc and the owner either sold his car or upgraded to the latest version.

The impression I get from various strings and discussing it with a service advisor is that there is an OS in the system that is separate from the disc. Using a bad disc apparently can corrupt the OS. (I don't have experience with that nor hard evidence but that is my understanding of such.)

One of the things I liked about the SC430 (when shopping around and considering other convertibles) was the built-in touchscreen navigation system. During my test drive of the SC430 (I'm supposed to take possession later today) I noticed that the screen seemed pretty dim. It was a sunny day, so I cranked up the brightness all the way, but it still seemed to wash out. What are other impressions about this?

Another thing that got me thinking...does the touchscreen control anything other than nav? For $300 nowadays, you could probably get a nice large-screen TomTom/Garmin/Magellan unit with built-in Bluetooth, and I'm wondering if you could get one the right size to completely cover the built-in system's screen, and then drill a hole somewhere to run the power through the dash. I'm sure you wouldn't be able to close the Lexus nav screen cover, but I'm wondering if anyone has thought about doing something like this.
