I have used plugs in years past. Worked in a gas station and we plugged nail holes all the time. They were rubber plugs that we dipped in glue....pushed all the way through the tire, pulled half way out and snipped off the tool. I ran with plugged tired until they wore out.

These days the kits come with the same type tool, but the plug is a cord with tar like substance. I have been told it drys out and will begin to leak over time. I did plug a run-flat with one of these kits.....ran it for a month or so.....replaced the tires with Pilots and bought a RX8 spare to throw in the trunk for long trips. Around town I don't bother with a spare since every nail I have ever picked up in the last ten years, takes days to loose so much air you can't make it to a tire shop.

I carry the Conti Comfort Kit AND an OEM spare.

I've yet to use the goo in the Conti kit but, as a portable air compressor, it's come in VERY handy.

I agree with coach1; unless you pick up something REALLY nasty, you can limp to someplace that can fix it...especially if you've got some kind of portable air compressor in the car (there are some very inexpensive ones out there...the CCK is pretty expensive if you're just going to use it as a compressor).

I might pick up a DynaPlug kit too!

Last thing I picked up was an awl. Had to pull it out because of the handle going THUMP each tire rotation. Close enough to home that the wife brought me the spare. Plugged up fine at the gas station and still running today.

Awl? Ouch. I always carry a plug kit and compressor with me everywhere I go. Had to put it to use around 7 times total in my cars over the years. Back on the road in 15 minutes tops. Be forewarned it can be a bear to get that tool into the hole and work it for the plug to fit depending on the location of the hole. All have lasted the life of the tires though with my driving style is not long anyhow.

A plug kit doesn't do much good without a compressor, so I carry a compressor and fix a flat. To plug a tire roadside means you're probably pulling the wheel or laying in the road.
If you have to pull the wheel, you might as well mount the spare, if you have one. Then you get to trash your immaculate trunk with the punctured tire and rim.....

Default AAA any help?

Does anyone know if AAA carries tire supplies to get you back on the road? I would think that they would. Has anyone had experience with AAA and tire problems?

WHAT?? "Then you get to trash your immaculate trunk with the punctured tire and rim....."
Do you mean you haven't put a big trash can liner or lawn bag in the trunk to use when you have to take a tire off the car and put it into the trunk or, if there is already stuff in the trunk, the back seat? It keeps your hands clean, keeps your car clean, and costs about a nickel.
Do that now.
And these are tips I just don't pass out to anybody.

Now you're on to something...I'm thinking of buying a body bag. then if I get run over while laying in the road plugging a tire I'm prepared, and if I don't get run over I can line the trunk with it!

And if you run over someone else, take it from me, use the lawn bag to haul away the body and you will save yourself a lot of time-consuming legal problems.

Yesterday I got on sale at Lowes a Black and Decker AS1300 air station compressor for $32.95. Has ac/dc capability. Fits nicely in the trunk and works great though a little loud. Igot it online and picked up at the store.
