Club pricing is not a good deal at Sewell on the DVD disk as it is on other parts from them. It only saves you $2 off list price of $169 and you have to pay shipping. Shipping to Florida was $9.50.

My local Lexus dealer gave me 10% off just for asking.

Hi, My wife has a 2002 RX300 that has the dreaded "No Disk Detected" on the nav screen. Can someone tell me:

How do I eject the disk in order to look at the files on my PC as tfischer suggested?
Which drive does this Lexus comes with?
Which drive should I replace it with, assuming it is the drive and not the disk?

Someone suggested that it is unlikely to be the disk itself because it is undisturbed in the drive, so damage to it is unlikely. I agree but I would like to check the disk anyway, especially before shelling out hundreds of $$ for a new drive.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure where the drive is on the Gen 1 RX. I looked for it many years ago in a friend's car, and we could not find it. In the Gen 2, which is what I have, it's under the floor of the rear storage area. It's hard to see if you don't have bright ambient light, so use a flashlight. Once you find it, and I cannot believe your search for this in the Gen 1 forum turned up nothing on this point (or you would not ask such a simple question whose answer is surely in the manual), you just push the eject button. It's an optical drive, and works just like many DVD and CD drives.
Finally, it's unlikely that the disc is damaged, since an optical drive is read by a light beam, so nothing comes in contact with the surface of the disc. Good luck.

I know where the drive is. My question is, what drive should I replace it with? Gen 1, Gen 2? etc.

Thanks

List of compatible Lexus vehicles using the GEN 2/3 navigation system :

2002 - 2003: ES300 / ES330
2001 - 2005: GS300 / GS430
2003 - 2004: GX470
2001 - 2003: LS430
2001 - 2003: LX470
2001 - 2004: RX300 / RX330
2002 - 2004: SC430
2002 - 2005: IS300

So if your system was original and the map current, it would be a GEN 2/3 system with the GEN 2/3 Ver 12.1 map disc.

Going by that list, your 2002 RX300 left the factory with the GEN 2/3 system. You can verify this a few ways. Eject the DVD and search on the Lexus Part Number or get the DVD player part number ( could be 86841-33060 on the Toyota Denso sticker on the back of the unit ) and look that up. Assuming you have the GEN 2/3 system, you can replace it with the same thing and use the same navigation disc ( if it is still good / current ) or you can upgrade the system by replacing it with the GEN 4 player. It is plug-n-play connector and mounting wise but you will also need to get a GEN 4 map disc.

Thanks FlopTop.

So, just to verify, I can use a 86841-50090 Gen 4 DVD Drive with a W41 4.2 Gen 4 disc in my wife's 2002 RX300?

Yes. The 4.2 maps are from 2004 and a bit out of date. The 86841-50090 is a Gen 4 player and while the connector locations are slightly different from the Gen 4 P/N 86841-33060 unit I used, the plugs are the same and you should have enough cable length to reach.

the "no disk detected" risk is the reason why I keep a 12 year old plus navigation disc in my SC430. I'm afraid of pulling it out.

Excellent thinking.
I'm the same way: I'd rather get lost than take a risk like that.

Why would ejecting the disc cause a problem .I believe you are being over-cautious. The drives have a life span like any other electronic device. Ejecting the disc and inserting an updated one should have absolutely no affect on the drive or the disc. Case-in-point, our disc has never been ejected, and the drive failed.

My two cars use the same data disc, so I will swap the discs between the cars from time to time, at least three or four times a year, in order that the newer one is in the car that is going to hit the road. That's been going on for about seven years, and although we don't want to generalize from insufficient data (I am not yet certified as a representative sample of anything), so far no problems.

read through almost every page not sure if this question was answered or not, but can the WHOLE internal drive be replaced? apparently finding a motor is too difficult so my thoughts were can I just go to fry's and purchase a dvd drive and strip the casing and swap the drives?

I am slightly under the impression that it is a specialized Lexus proprietary drive because it has firmware updates. Also purchasing a different model outside of the Lexus brand may require adapting the wiring harness. I just took mine out to install a Video Integration unit and the connections looked pretty specialized for the unit.

I wasn't all that confident that the disk was the problem so I took it to another dealer (both were lexus), and they said I my compter was bad on the nav system and it would be $3000 to replace it unless they could pull it out of another vehicle, then it would be $1800. So my problem is, I would like to try the disk obviously first to see if that will solve the problem, but I don't want to shell out $300 and have it not work, and then learn it was the computer that was broke. Anyone know where I can get the updated disk for cheaper so I can at least try it. Please Help
Can you just have the desk tested by Lexus or by someone with the same car? At least that would avoid spending money on something you didn't need.
