Default What if our car flips over?

Lately I have been noticing that most convertibles have some sort of guard/brace/tubing on the back headrests to protect the occupants of the vehicle in case of a rollover, and it kinda scares me that ours does not! My friends SL has a button which allows him to raise and lower the braces, I’ve also seen bugs, pt cruisers, audi’s with these braces. Why doesn’t our car come with such a device? The one thing I did notice is that most of these cars have a “shallow cabin” meaning that when you sit in them you feel very vulnerable. As you sit in the SC you can help but feel that the interior is surrounding you and that you are in a cocoon, is this a false sense of security or will it really save our necks?

I am not positive about this, but I believe the rear head-rests are to be of some kind of support. This could be false, but seems like a good idea.

It is the rear headrests there's a picture of them somewhere around here. Search roll hoop & subwoofer photo.

correct, the rear headrests are the roll bars. though i think they are a bit on the short side

but this is a great design, compared to all the other exposed ones

These are short roll over bars. Especially for us that are over 6 feet tall! But as mentioned by rominl, it is a neat design. Would also explain why the so called back seats are so straight up. Now we know for the next time someone says, "why are your backseats so straight up?"

"Those aren't backseats, they're roll bar covers!"

My old Audi TT had the same roll bar look (two hoops), but they were much taller. Maybe we're supposed to assume the fetal position in a crash.

That's a good one. I'll have to remember that!

I would rather not test to see if they actually work. One would think at 3850lbs they would be motorized (pop up) , but I suppose the motorized doors on the nav and radio controls were more important. At 6'0" I think I would lose a few inches in the event of a roll over.

seriously. at 5'7" i already don't feel the roll bars are tall enough.

I took the liberty of making a little drawing to show what were referring to.

Id never thought the way I slouch in my seat might save my life

With the way my seat is reclined I am usually well below that red line.... even tho it still scares me in the event of a roll BTW I'm 6'1

Factor in about 1-2" of play , whether in the seat belt lock and/or the jelly belly(lap). I have always thought the seats in this car should be able to go down further. Sits too high.
